Back to the Bay, CSUEB's annual professional development event is sponsored by Academic Affairs, Office of Faculty Development, the Online Campus, and University Extension. Each year since 2003, Back to the Bay brings faculty and staff together to share their expertise, and learn from one another and campus experts about topics of interest to faculty in their roles as teachers, advisors, researchers, users of technology, and active participants in the campus community. Back to the Bay features a variety of workshops on pedagogy, research, governance, and teaching with technology usually held in Valley Business & Technology Center [VBT]). In August 2020, we hosted our first all virtual Back to the Bay, when over 298 people attended the Keynote Address. Back to the Bay is held each August on the Thursday before instruction begins.

Blackboard Basics- Features, Tools, and Basic How-tos

Make your course materials accessible for all students
Interested in making your course content (pdfs, powerpoints, videos, etc.) accessible for all students? This workshop will explore how to check for common accessibility issues as well as produce alternative formats, using Blackboard's Ally tool. You will also be introduced to strategies that utilize free tools like Google slides, Grackledocs, Acrobat Pro, etc. to fix common accessibility errors and ensure your course materials are accessible to all of your students. Virtual Reality in an Introductory Engineering Course

Join President Morishita and Provost Inch to launch our first ever virtual Back to the Bay Keynote! In Spring 2020, CSU East Bay sociologists conducted a survey on student experiences with remote instruction. Students answered questions about their experiences with instruction moving online, their stress, focus, adaptation, and resilience. We’ll learn how students are coping and gain understanding of their learning conditions as we prepare for fall classes. Making the most of Zoom for synchronous instruction
Now that you have set your Zoom meetings with your students, join the Online Campus to review and share some tips and tricks for leveraging Zoom's features. Bring the Outside World In through Writing
Writing can be used to bring the outside world and other disciplines into your class for powerful learning experiences. In fact, connecting course learning to prior knowledge and student experience is an inclusive and effective teaching practice. Review straight-forward assessment approaches online that promote student learning and help prevent bias and racism. Setting up Your Gradebook in Blackboard
You will be led through the essentials of the Grade Center in Blackboard and through how to set a up “straight points” grading schema. The straight points schema is one in which points are simply tallied up to a final total, which determines the student’s final grade.Presenter: Lacey Garza, Online Campus
F2F to Online teaching equivalencies: Transitioning your course online
How do I move my course online? Other than Zoom, what else can I do? Where do I start? This workshop will address strategies for transitioning your face to face course to an online format. Basic strategies for organizing content, communication & class participation, learning activities, collaboration, direct instruction and assessments will be covered. The Building Blocks for Effective Social Responsibility Assignments
The COVID pandemic has laid bare the impact of centuries of racism, and we have the opportunity and responsibility to address these and promote social responsibility on our campus. Fine-tune assignments in your course that help students build the capacities and aptitudes identified in the Social Responsibility rubric. Participants will receive a guide developed by and for Cal State East Bay faculty to develop impactful social responsibility assignments. Academic Integrity and Your Online Course
This session will briefly cover options for proctoring exams online as well as creating assessments that encourage academic integrity. Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor, and Zoom for proctoring exams will be reviewed. We'll also discuss approaches to assessment that discourage plagiarism & cheating. Creating Productive Classroom and Research Communities During COVID-19: Notes from the First Year
This panel focuses on second-year faculty's experiences transitioning face-to-face classes and student scholarship to online settings during the pandemic. Reflecting on some of the pedagogical challenges in a tumultuous first year, these faculty will discuss insights they learned regarding impediments to student success and strategies/activities used to foster productivity and a sense of community in classroom and research settings.
