Cal State East Bay’s Student and Faculty Support Building recently received a LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the first building on campus with the distinction. The five-story, 75,344-square foot building, which replaced the seismically unsafe Warren Hall, is home to faculty offices, student and faculty support services and the campus’ Welcome Center.
The building was completed in December 2015 to LEED specifications, but the official process to certify it was only recently finalized, according to Jillian Buckholz, Cal State East Bay’s director of sustainability. Buckholz said she hopes the building is an example of the future of Cal State East Bay’s focus on sustainability.
"The proven, third-party certified verification through LEED Platinum Certification of the SF building proves that sustainability is a high-priority to our campus,” she said.
According to the USGBC report, the building received its certification for incorporating strategies and solutions aimed at water savings, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. For example, the landscape design allows for on-site infiltration of water, the filtration of runoff headed for the city’s storm system and includes drought-tolerant plants and an irrigation system expected to reduce landscape irrigation by more than 80 percent.
