The growth of job openings for criminal justice majors is keeping pace with the national average for all jobs at 7 percent, and the demand for police officers and investigators is anticipated to grow by more than 50,000 positions in the next decade according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Cal State East Bay’s Department of Criminal Justice is helping to fill that demand with more than 800 declared majors, and the career services website Zippia.com is recognizing the university for the opportunities it offers to graduates of the program. Cal State East Bay was ranked No. 6 out of seven programs that were designated top in the state.

“Our program prepares students to be community leaders, and encourages participation in civic engagement activities,” said Associate Professor and Department Chair Dawna Komorosky. “Upon graduation, many of our students find employment in criminal justice and related fields such as law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole and as community service providers.”

Komorosky also sees potential for Cal State East Bay students beyond the positions that are options for those with bachelor’s degrees.

“Several of our graduates hold leadership positions in criminal justice agencies throughout the Bay Area, and others have gone on to earn their MSW or complete law school,” Komorosky said. “As our program continues to grow, we look forward to working with our dedicated students to help them reach their academic and career goals.”

The Zippia ranking was composed predominantly of CSU campuses, including San Diego State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, San Jose State and CSU Dominquez Hills. Per the Zippia website, the list was compiled using information from the National Center for Education Statistics and College Scorecard Data. Criteria for the ranking was divided into three categories, including “Career Results,” “Criminal Justice Emphasis” and “School Performance.” Learn more about Zippia’s ranking methodology and view the full list
