Cal State East Bay’s Hayward Promise Neighborhood program celebrated International Women’s Day on Thursday with an assembly at Tennyson High School. The event included more than 100 high school students and conversations about setting goals and breaking barriers, women in government and the evolving role of women in the workplace.

Hayward Mayor Barbara Halliday, City Manager Kelly McAdoo, Human Resources Director Nina Collins and City Council Member and Cal State East Bay alumna Elisa Marquez led the discussion.

HPN Student Success Coach and event organizer Anthony Jackson said the women were invited because each of them influence and add esteem and value to the city of Hayward.

“When I was young, I had an image in my head about how authority figures and decision makers looked,” Jackson said. “To me, it was sort of a form of mental institutionalization — certain men of a certain race and age group were decision makers, and they deserved our respect. Well, in 2018, I want our young people, specifically our young women, to know that there are women in the world that look like them, and are making waves, and not only waves but decisions and they can do the same thing.”

Led by Cal State East Bay and funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Hayward Promise Neighborhood is a partnership of residents, local schools, colleges, government agencies, businesses and nonprofit organizations. These partners work together to provide long-lasting strategies and solutions for the entire HPN neighborhood of Jackson Triangle and beyond.
