Summer 2018 is rapidly approaching and for many that means beach blankets and sandy beaches. But what would happen if the hundreds who flock to places such as the coastline of Texas arrived only to see the sand replaced with oil because of drilling?

Cal State East Bay’s Department of Hospitality and Recreation has the answer and is doing its part to help combat the likelihood of such reality.

This month, sustainable tourism specialists from as far away as South Korea and North Africa will gather at the university for the ninth Scientific International Conference on Sustainable Tourism.

Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Zach Hallab said the event conference "presents an opportunity for participants to share their research outcomes pertaining to creative tourism initiatives in different destinations from the around the world that involve the participation of tourists, through the destination's natural and cultural assets, in the development of sustainable tourism products and services." 

The international event is also an opportunity for the university and the department’s faculty and students to explore economic, social and environmental impacts of the industry.

Topics will be varied at the conference, but Hallab said the main goal is to focus on the importance of respecting local culture, rules, and policies through a collaborative effort of exchanging information, sharing research findings and networking. A gala dinner is scheduled for April 25 as well as a field trip to Golden Gate Park, Muir Woods and Sausalito that will cover how these locations are currently implementing sustainable practices.

The conference will take place in the New Union Multipurpose, and Bay View rooms and registration is required.
