Cal State East Bay teacher education professor Lettie Ramirez will be honored with an International Latino Book Award this summer for the book she curated called “You Are Not Alone: Recipes for Success by Parents for Parents.” The book, published in English and Spanish, includes several chapters written by local parents who are supported by the university’s Hayward Promise Neighborhood program.

The essays cover a variety of topics including early childhood; nutrition; teaching math and science at home and budgeting. Ramirez said it is designed to include easy-to-use advice written in a way that connects the reader to their peers.

The premise of the book began three years ago when she and several HPN parents created a list of topics they were struggling with. HPN brought in various Cal State East Bay faculty and experts in each of those areas, and after they mastered the concepts, many parents wanted to share what they learned and their experience.

“We tried to focus on what the community needed to know,” Ramirez said. “[This award] is the validation of what happens when you work hard. I get chills; it hasn’t sunk in yet.”

The International Latino Book Awards will be presented Sept. 8 at CSU Northridge.
