High school students involved in Hayward Promise Neighborhoods’ Student Success Initiative spent a week this summer exploring digital art at Stanford’s annual Digital Media Academy.
"It helped me grow as a person, but I think more importantly, as a student," said Troy Henry, a Hayward High School student.
Each of the students from Tennyson, Hayward and Mount Eden high schools chose one of these four courses to focus on: graphic design, advanced filmmaking, 2D animation and digital illustrations or character animation.
"For the third year, our Hayward Promise Neighborhood high school students were excited and engaged participants in the very rich learning environment of the Digital Media Academy at Stanford University,” said Melinda Hall, HPN’s executive director. “They created wonderful and thoughtful presentations that were presented to parents and staff from the academy. The question they asked most often was, 'Can we come back next year?’”
Led by Cal State East Bay, Hayward Promise Neighborhood is a partnership of local educators, government agencies, businesses and nonprofits collaborating to fully support residents of South Hayward as well as students who attend the nine schools and one preschool in the area.
