CSUEB, CSU Reach Out to African Am. Churches

CSUEB President Mo Qayoumi speaks to a church congregation for Super Sunday in 2008.
- February 9, 2009
In an effort to increase the number of African Americans attending college, the California State University system is partnering with Bay Area African American churches for the annual "CSU Super Sunday" on Sunday, Feb. 15. Throughout the day, CSU presidents, trustees, professors and Chancellor Charles Reed will address congregations at the churches.
Since last year's Super Sunday, the CSU outreach has grown significantly, including the appearances of more than a dozen outreach teams from Cal State East Bay for the 2009 events.
CSU staff and church education liaisons have met to develop ways to further reach out to the African American community, particularly to young men. Some of the new programs launched include financial aid workshops, expanded distribution of college materials to 6th through 12th grade students and their parents, and the development of a how-to guide for church educational advisers who work directly with families within these communities.
"At Super Sunday, thousands of students and their families learn that planning for college starts in the sixth grade," the CSU chancellor said. "We hope to make communities aware of the steps that students need to complete each year to get to college. We are pleased to say that these efforts are paying off. In recent years we have noticed an increase in African American applications and enrollment."
Following each of the selected church services on Super Sunday, CSU outreach directors and church education advisors will provide information on the application and admission process, including virtual tours through CSU Mentor, the Web site that helps students apply for college.
During Super Sunday, Chancellor Reed and campus presidents will discuss the role of parent involvement and early student preparation in getting to college. Reed will speak in Oakland at Center of Hope Community Church, 8411 MacArthur Blvd. at 11 a.m.
Cal State East Bay President Mohammad Qayoumi will address two church congregations in Oakland on Feb. 15. At 8 a.m. he will be at Acts Full Gospel Church of God in Christ, 1034 66th Ave., and at 10:30 a.m. he will speak at Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, 1909 Market St.
The CSU Web site is carrying a series of blogs, including one from President Qayoumi. It is available at

"Super Sunday is not just episodic, its part of a year-round effort on our part to get the word out about the opportunities available in the CSU to students from all underserved populations," Qayoumi said. "Cal State East Bay and the other CSU campuses are deeply committed to reaching out to ensure that they and their families know about financial assistance and how to become eligible for college. Our recent rise in admission applications is a good sign that outreach makes a difference. That encourages us to keep getting out this message and develop new ways to reach out to the African American and other underserved communities."
One of the informational pieces to be distributed during Super Sunday is the "How to Get to College" poster, providing middle and high school students and their parents with step-by-step information on the path to college. Members of each congregation also will hear about the CSU's Early Assessment Program, an academic preparation testing program enabling 11th graders to gauge their college readiness in English language arts and mathematics long before applying to the CSU.
