Cal State University officials credit outreach efforts with contributing to the rise in black students attending college.

Those efforts will continue this weekend with the fourth annual Super Sunday, a program in which educators from the CSU system visit area African-American churches and provide materials and information about attending institutions of higher education.

"This provides our youth with a good basis to become active, contributing and very aggressive members of the community," said Evelyn Hooker, who runs a scholarship program at Palma Ceia Baptist Church in Hayward. "And I say aggressive because once you are educated, you can move forward, reach back and help your community."

Jennifer Jones, a 2000 graduate of Cal State East Bay and a scientist at Abbott Laboratories in Santa Clara, is scheduled to visit Palma Ceia at 10 a.m. Sunday. Similar visits will be made throughout the Bay Area by CSU presidents, trustees and professors to address church congregations.

"We hope to make communities aware of the steps that students need to complete each year to get to college," CSU Chancellor Charles Reed said in a statement. "We are pleased to say that these efforts are paying off. In recent years we have noticed an increase in African-American applications and enrollment."

Reed is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. at the Center of Hope Community Church in Oakland.

Information on the application and admission process will be provided by CSU outreach directors and church education advisers following programs at the selected churches - something Bishop Jerry Macklin, pastor at Glad Tidings Church of God in Christ in Hayward, said is invaluable.

"When the university comes to these neighborhoods, it says everybody has an opportunity to attend college," Macklin said. "The program has been very successful and has been a real inspiration to youths in our community."
