Construction resumes on admin building

Construction has resumed on the $42 million Student Services Administration building on the Hayward Campus of California State University, East Bay.
Some of the construction workers returned Monday (March 2) to the SSA building site for the first time in more than two months after work was halted Dec. 29. Stoppages were ordered in Hayward and at other construction sites throughout the California State University system by CSU Chancellor Charles Reed, due to the shortage of state funds caused by the governor's and state legislature's delay in approving a state budget.
Shawn Bibb, CSUEB vice president for Administration and Finance, received authorization Feb. 20 from CSU system chief financial officer Benjamin Quillian for work to continue on the campus' bond-related construction project following the mid-February budget agreement between Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the legislature. Bibb and David Cain, CSUEB associate vice president for Facilities Management, then informed Lathrop Construction Associates, Van Pelt Construction Management, and RMW Architects that their workers could return to the the SSA project March 2.
When construction was halted, the SSA building was estimated to be about 62 percent complete, according to David Schultz, who has been Cal State East Bay's SSA project manager since June. Bibb said the project, which was originally scheduled for completion in September, likely will be finished in January 2010.
"We'll know that better by the end of March," Schultz said. "We normally have about 60 construction workers on the project on any given day of full operation. But a number of them moved on to other projects when work stopped here. We hope to be back to full operation within the next two weeks. That's our goal."
