Poet John Espinoza to read May 20 at Distinguished Writers Event

Poet John Olivares Espinoza will read from "The Date Fruit Elegies," his inaugural book of poetry, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, as part of the California State University, East Bay Distinguished Writers Series. The free presentation will be in the Biella Room of the University Library, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward.
"Date Fruit Elegies" inaugurated Bilingual Press's new poetry series Canto Cosas in 2008 and was nominated for a Northern California Book Award in Poetry by the Northern California Book Reviewers. Espinoza studied creative writing at the University of California, Riverside, and at Arizona State University. He teaches writing and literature at The National Hispanic University in San Jose.
The reading is sponsored by the Department of English, in conjunction with the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Light refreshments and a book signing will follow.
