CSU East Bay Chosen by IDG's InfoWorld Among Green 15 Universities Recognized for Green Computing

  • April 24, 2009

FREMONT, CA-- 3PAR® (NYSE: PAR), the leading global provider of utility storage, announced today that IDG's InfoWorld, the leading integrated media brand for IT Decision Makers, has selected 3PAR customer California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) for InfoWorld's 2009 Green 15 Awards. This honor is part of InfoWorld's Green 15 special feature, which was published April 22 on InfoWorld.com.

"This year's Green 15 winners demonstrate, once again, that green IT projects can be a win-win proposition," said Ted Samson, Senior Analyst, InfoWorld. "These organizations have not only helped the planet by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and keeping e-waste out of landfills, but they've also reaped measurable business benefits, such as significantly lower electricity bills, fewer hardware refreshes, and postponed datacenter-expansion projects -- along with gains in efficiency and productivity."

Companies around the world have embraced green technology to drive projects and develop products aimed at boosting energy efficiency, trimming waste, and reducing or eliminating the use or the production of harmful substances. The InfoWorld Green 15 awards recognize the 15 most innovative IT initiatives that fall under this umbrella of sustainability. The virtualized datacenter built by CSUEB using utility storage from 3PAR and server virtualization from VMware® was selected by InfoWorld based on their ability to provide the most beneficial impact to the environment and for their excellence in green IT.

"In late 2007, our datacenter was hurdling towards an all-out power crisis. PG&E had informed us that no more power could be delivered. We would be out of power in less than six months," said Rich Avila, Director, Server Operations & System Support at CSUEB. "With the power and cooling savings we realized with 3PAR and VMware, our datacenter has been given a new lease on life."

CSUEB combined storage virtualization from 3PAR with server virtualization from VMware to reduce storage capacity requirements by 80% and power consumption by 26%, even after expanding the environment by adding 21 new applications. These savings qualified the university to participate in the 3PAR Virtual Technology Incentive Program (V-TIP) and to receive financial incentives from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The power savings achieved by CSUEB were independently validated by Wikibon Energy Lab, a service provided by wikibon.org, which determined that 3PAR Thin Provisioning software reduced SAN energy consumption by up to 75%.

"3PAR Utility Storage is specifically designed to enhance the efficiencies of server virtualization to boost capacity savings and improve flexibility," said David Scott, CEO and President of 3PAR. "By dramatically reducing capacity requirements, 3PAR not only simplifies the storage environment, but we allow our customers to minimize the resources needed to power, house, cool, and administer their storage. To us, it's not just about being green but about doing more with less -- a concept that has never been more important to businesses or to the environment."
