Andy Cumbo Named Cal State East Bay Men's Soccer Coach

HAYWARD, Calif. - Andy Cumbo, who enjoyed success coaching both Humboldt State soccer programs, has been named the head coach of the Cal State East Bay men's soccer team.

"His leadership and professionalism contributed to making Andy a successful candidate", Director of Athletics Debby DeAngelis said. "Andy's experience coaching in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as well as his positive attitude and enthusiasm will help the men's soccer program make the move to Division II."

Andy Cumbo had these thoughts about his new position:"I'm excited to be named the new men's soccer coach at Cal State East Bay. There is a strong tradition of men's soccer over the past four decades and I'm honored to be here. I'm looking forward to working with the hard working group of current players. This is such an exciting time to be a part of Cal State East Bay and its Athletic Department with their move to NCAA Division II and the CCAA. My goal in the near future is to develop the men's soccer team to be a conference contender, while holding high academic standards for my student-athletes."

In his five seasons as the Humboldt State men's soccer head coach, Cumbo led the Lumberjacks to an in season NSCAA Regional Ranking of 6th in both 2008 and 2007 and an NCAA Regional Ranking of 4th in 2006. During the 2005 season, Cumbo was named Conference Co-Coach of the Year. In 2004, the Lumberjacks were the 3rd Most Improved Team in Division II. During his five years at the helm, the Lumberjacks produced five NSCAA All-Region Players, 21 All Conference and eight All-Academic athletes, and four Conference Player's of the Week.

As the women's head coach at Humboldt State since 2001, Cumbo guided his team to the 2006 CCAA Conference Tournament and most wins in a season (2003&2006). Thirty-nine All-Conference and 15 Academic Athletes have been produced during Cumbo's tenure as women's soccer coach at Humboldt State.

Cumbo is currently the NSCAA Division II West Regional Chairman and the NSCAA Division II All America National Chairman. He received his coaching licenses through the United States Soccer Federation (National "A" Diploma) and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (Advanced National Diploma).

As a four-year goalkeeper at SUNY-Plattsburgh, Cumbo received All-Conference honors, recorded 24 shutouts and was a two-year Captain.

Cumbo received his Bachelor of Art in philosophy from State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 2000 and completed his Master of Science in Kinesiology from Humboldt State in 2002. He will begin his position at Cal State East Bay on June 22nd.
