Bike to work event raises money for athletic scholarships

The athletics department hosted a bike to work fundraiser on Aug. 7 at the Hayward campus, raising $3,175 for Pioneer athletic scholarships. The event saw five Cal State East Bay employees bike to work from as far away as San Jose, gathering donations from friends, family and community members while promoting fitness and environmental awareness.
Cal State East Bay Vice President of Administration and Finance Shawn Bibb, University Planner Jim Zavagno and Director of Facilities Operations Bob Andrews, each made the 40-mile trek from San Jose to the Hayward campus. CSUEB Director of Instructional Scheduling Martha Wallace and her husband Mike also joined in for the fundraiser, riding approximately 30 miles from San Lorenzo.
The five bikers collected pledges on a per-mile basis and as a flat fee, with 30 donors making contributions. The donations will contribute to the establishment of a scholarship endowment for Cal State East Bay student-athletes. The endowment will provide funding for student-athletes representing CSUEB's 15 intercollegiate men's and women's sports programs.
Members of the athletics department greeted the participants with water, juice and snacks at the Harder Road entrance to campus. Each of the participants made their way up the .8-mile hill on Harder Road, which has an average incline of 9 percent between Mission Boulevard and West Loop Road.
Cal State East Bay is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Pioneers will begin competition in NCAA Division II and the California Collegiate Athletic Association during the 2009-2010 seasons. Since 1961, the Pioneers have won six collegiate national championships, approximately 160 Pioneer student-athletes have achieved All-America status and CSUEB teams have collected 77 conference titles.
