Successful golf classic brings in funds for athletic scholarships

The 13th annual Cal State East Bay Golf Classic, held Aug. 26 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, raised more than $6,000 for Pioneer athletic scholarships. Hosted by the CSUEB Athletics Department, the event featured 16 foursomes hitting the links before gathering for a banquet and silent auction.

The proceeds from the tournament will contribute to the establishment of the university's first athletic scholarship endowment, which will provide financial assistance for student-athletes who represent the university's 15 intercollegiate men's and women's teams. 

"The 13th annual golf tournament was a success both on the course and for intercollegiate athletics," said Athletic Director Debby De Angelis. "Many of our long time supporters as well as new friends enjoyed a beautiful day of golf at Hiddenbrooke. We are greatly appreciative of all of the individuals and businesses who provided support to this great event."

Among the tournament participants were Shawn Bibb, Cal State East Bay vice president of Administration and Finance; Stan Hebert, associate vice president for Student Affairs; Terri Swartz, dean of the College of Business and Economics; and Pioneer coaches Will Biggs, Dirk Morrison, Greg Ryan, Alan Sue and Toni West.

Following a successful day on the course, several individuals and foursomes earned recognition for their play. Among the award winners were the first place team of head men's and women's golf coach Alan Sue, Jerry Sue, Doug Ladd and Bob McDonald, who tied the second place team of Ken Cherry, Paul McKellar, Greg Mitchell and Mario Toscano — representing tournament sponsor Big-O Tires of San Leandro — with a 14-under-par 58. Sue and his group broke the tie by shooting a 27 on the back nine.

CSUEB is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Pioneers are beginning competition in NCAA Division II and the California Collegiate Athletic Association during the 2009-2010 sports seasons. Since 1961, the Pioneers have won six collegiate national championships. Approximately 160 Pioneer student-athletes have achieved All-America status and CSUEB teams have collected 77 conference titles.
