Cal State Hayward Defeats Pioneers in Alumni Game

HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State Hayward defeated the Pioneers 10-9 in the first annual Alumni vs. Alumni Baseball Game on October 10. The Pioneers tied the score 4-4 on a three-run homer by Michael Thomasson. Cal State Hayward took an 8-5 lead in the seventh inning highlighted by a two-run double by Brian Lloyd.

Cal State Hayward added two more runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run off the bat of Manny Merel. Lamonte Toney belted a three-run home run as a late rally in the bottom of the ninth fell short for the Pioneers.

Steven Roll, the fourth of five Cal State Hayward pitchers, recorded the victory. Lloyd, Merel, and Steven Shinkwin each drove in a pair of runs while Tyler Shook was 2-for-2 at the plate for Cal State Hayward. Toney and Thomasson drove in seven of the Pioneers nine runs. Domingo Rodriguez and Jason Bumbaca each had two hits for the Pioneers. Ray Stokes had a big day for the Pioneers with two hits, three runs scored, and four stolen bases.
