Dig Pink event to raise money for breast cancer research

The athletics department and the Cal State East Bay volleyball team are participating in a national event to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment on Oct. 16, when the Pioneer volleyball team hosts No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym. The event, better known as Dig Pink Night, is part of a month-long breast cancer awareness rally being held at high schools and colleges across the country.
"As a part of our ongoing community engagement, participating in this awareness and research cause is a perfect fit for athletics," Director of Athletics Debby De Angelis said. "We are excited to bring this national program to our campus and contribute to a good cause."
Both teams will warm up in customized Dig Pink shirts, which will also be available for sale at the match. Shirts can be purchased for $10 or $5 for Cal State East Bay students with all proceeds going towards the Dig Pink fundraising effort. The athletics department will also donate all ticket sales to the cause.
"The opportunity for our volleyball program to support such a worthy cause is significant," Cal State East Bay head volleyball coach Jim Spagle said. "My team and coaching staff are both excited and honored to bring attention to this horrific disease. The toughness, persistence, and determination required to combat this disease are the same intangibles required to dig a volleyball only centimeters off the floor. We look forward to the challenge!"
Already this October, the Side-Out Foundation and participating Dig Pink schools have raised over $100,000 in support of breast cancer awareness and research.
Every year, the Side-Out Foundation organizes breast cancer awareness nights with volleyball teams across the United States during the month of October, aiming to educate and raise funds to assist in the fight to eradicate the disease. In 2008, the Dig Pink campaign featured over 300 teams and raised nearly $400,000.
All Pioneer home volleyball matches are contested at Pioneer Gym. Doors open at 6 p.m. on Friday, with first serve set for 7 p.m. For more information on the Dig Pink campaign, visit .
