New pre-health pro sciences certificate offered at CSUEB

Facing an aging population with increasing medical needs, the new certificate in pre-health professional sciences offered by California State University, East Bay will provide the training necessary to meet the demands of the health care industry, preparing students for entry into medical or veterinary school.
The certificate program begins with the winter 2010 quarter, which starts Jan. 4.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, job prospects in health care services are expected to increase by 20 percent between 2006 and 2016. This growth will account for three million new jobs in sectors including private and public hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, medical offices (medical, dental, optometry and veterinary), home health care services, outpatient care centers and medical and diagnostic laboratories.
Admission into graduate health professional schools, however, remains highly selective, requiring entrants who blend academic scholarship and practical experience with such personal traits as maturity, leadership, self-discipline, and empathy.
CSUEB’s new pre-health sciences professional certificate program is designed to prepare students for entrance into competitive health professional schools and, ultimately, a career in the health care industry. The program combines essential knowledge provided through introductory and advanced science courses with preparation for required national entrance tests including the MCAT, DAT, GRE and OAT. Students in the CSUEB program are supported with mentoring, tutoring and advising.
