With the announcement of its first comprehensive campaign this summer, Cal State East Bay is beginning a seven- to eight-year effort to raise $40 million to $50 million for the university’s top priorities. To prepare for growth in fundraising activities, President Mohammad Qayoumi has invited prominent individuals to form a Campaign Steering Committee.

“This is an important step in the early quiet phase of our campaign,” said President Qayoumi. “Everyone on the committee understands the value of the campaign priorities and agrees with me that we cannot wait to begin raising awareness and early support for the investments we need to make real our commitment to regional stewardship.”

Two notable alumni will jointly chair the committee: Lou Miramontes ’76 and Allen Warren ’89. Miramontes, a former Alumnus of the Year and last year’s honors convocation speaker, is a partner at the accounting firm KPMG. Warren, president of New Faze Development, is a trustee of the Cal State East Bay Educational Foundation.

Several other graduates will serve on the committee as well. Carolyn Aver ’82 is the co-founder and senior financial executive of Aver Family Vineyards in San Martin. Rich Sherratt ’70 is CEO of Ballena Technologies in Alameda. Hank Salvo ’72, the chair of the Educational Foundation, is the former CFO of Robert Mondavi and Clorox.

The other committee members are Atef Eltoukhy, president of Aurum Capital Management; Gay Hoagland, executive director of the Stanford Educational Leadership Institute; and Emily Shanks, a senior vice president at Bank of America.

“It was important to bring people with different backgrounds, perspectives and relationships onto the committee,” said Bob Burt, vice president of University Advancement. “They will help us expand our fundraising capacity in many different directions.”

The steering committee will advise the president on campaign strategy, introduce advancement staff to other potential supporters and guide the development of campaign materials and promotions.

“To be the university we want to be, we have to have a major campaign,” said Sherratt, who recently made a gift to endow the first athletics scholarship fund. He noted several changes, such as expanded on-campus housing, as positive developments for students and supporters.
