It is hard to believe that just one month remains in our first basketball season in Division II. The excitement is just beginning, however, as we look forward to the week of Feb. 22-26 when Cal State East Bay celebrates Homecoming with games and special events all week. Likewise, the start of the baseball, softball, water polo, track and golf seasons and the launch of our new athletics website are creating quite a buzz.
With Homecoming just around the corner, it's important to get in the know about all the great events happening on campus that week. The Pioneer baseball team will get things started, hosting Patten University at 2 p.m. on Monday. A campus-wide office decorating contest and East Bay Idol competition will highlight Tuesday's events, with the East bay Idol winners performing live at the Homecoming basketball games.
Wednesday will feature a live musical performance at Noon, followed by the first two of four basketball games on the week as the Pioneers host Humboldt State at Pioneer Gym at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. A lunchtime Pioneer Pride Fashion Show will kick off Thursday's events, while Spoken Word Unleashed will be held at 7 p.m. at the University Theater before campus organizations meet at Pioneer Heights to decorate their floats for the Homecoming Parade.
The Pioneer softball team will start the ball rolling for Friday's slew of events, hosting Cal State San Bernardino at Pioneer Softball Field. The highly anticipated Homecoming Parade starts at Pioneer Heights at 3 p.m. before working its way down to Pioneer Gym where ASI will host a tailgate party featuring a food-eating contest and music.
With everyone amped up for the games, the Pioneers will play host to Sonoma State at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., where the two squads will also honor their seniors in their final games in the red and black. Students will have the chance to show their ultimate Pioneer Pride in the Pete's Pit section, while the 2010 Homecoming Court will be revealed during the games. Friday's festivities will close out with a Homecoming Party at the Dining Commons following all the action at Pioneer Gym.
With the wide range of exciting activities available during Homecoming Week, I hope everyone in our community gets to show their Pioneer Pride and participate in the entertainment and fun as we close out our first basketball season in the CCAA and Division II.
Even more exciting athletics action awaits during the spring, as water polo and track kicked things off last weekend and baseball, softball and golf open their seasons this week. Women's water polo already recorded a big win, upsetting No. 18 Santa Clara at the NorCal Tournament on Sunday. Head out to Pioneer Pool this Sunday at Noon for the home opener against Cal State Monterey Bay.
To catch some baseball and softball action, head out to the Pioneer baseball and softball fields this spring. Softball opens the regular season this weekend, hosting Academy of Art for a doubleheader on Saturday at Noon, while baseball welcomes CCAA opponent Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.
With six sports in season starting this week, Pioneer fans will want to visit our new athletics website, located , to keep up on all the latest news and results. With a new look, more features and a more user-friendly design, we hope our new home on the web provides everyone in the university community with everything they need to support Pioneer Athletics.
The next few months should prove to be both entertaining and exciting for everyone involved with Cal State East Bay Athletics. Join in on the fun and support the Pioneers this spring. We hope to see you at Homecoming and go Pioneers!
