Cal State East Bay Topped by No. 3 Hawaii

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team closed out the Northern California Invitational with a 14-6 loss at the hands of No. 3 Hawai'i on Sunday evening. The Pioneers (1-2) got off to a slow start but were the only team in the tournament to out-score the Rainbow Wahine by more than a goal in a single quarter.

"We played well and I was happy we were able to come back," CSUEB Head Coach Lisa De Rossi-Cooper said. "Hawaii's a very strong and fast team and it was a big positive that we were able to stop their counter attack."

UH got out to a quick start in the first quarter, notching three goals early on while holding the Pioneers without a goal. East Bay's best chance came midway through the quarter, when junior driver Ana Rosa blasted a shot that was saved by the Hawai'i goalie.

Trailing 3-0, the Pioneers broke through the Rainbow Wahine defense with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter when senior two meter Brianna Finney put away her first goal of the season. Hawai'i responded, however, with three goals to finish the half with a 6-1 advantage. Freshman goalie Emily Hucal helped keep the game in hand for East Bay in the second frame, posting four saves including two saves on shots from point-blank range.

After the break, Hawai'i found new energy, putting in five straight goals after winning the sprint. Sophomore driver Monika Eggens set the tone for the Rainbow Wahine in the third, notching two goals. The Pioneers were able to steal one back, as junior utility Whitney Bell scored with just 19 ticks remaining. Hawai'i responded, though, as sophomore driver Jana Liessman's shot at the buzzer was blocked by Hucal but just slipped into the goal as time expired, giving UH a 12-2 lead going into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw senior goalie Lauren Merrill take over in goal for the Pioneers, who out-scored Hawai'i 4-2 in the final period. Junior driver Ana Rosa got the scoring started just 47 seconds into the quarter. The Rainbow Wahine responded with back-to-back goals from freshman two meter Amarens Genee, including an open-net score with 4:02 left after Merrill came out to try to stop a breakaway attack.

Cal State East Bay closed out the game strong, however, as junior driver Mary Rosa scored from outside with 3:32 left. Senior utility Jenna Casady capped an outstanding Sunday performance with back-to-back scores in the final 1:30 of the match, bringing her goal total in the two matches to six.

"We were able to swim with them and draw kick outs," Cooper said. "It's definitely a good sign that we were able to put up six goals against the No. 3 team."

Casady's two goals paced the Pioneers, while Liessman led the Rainbow Wahine with four scores of her own. Hawai'i keepers Serena Bredin and Ella Aiwohi combined for nine saves, while Hucal and Merrill combined for nine stops.

The Pioneers return to action next weekend when they host Cal State Monterey Bay in their home opener on Feb. 7 at noon at Pioneer Pool.
