Cal State East Bay Topped By Monterey Bay, 82-62
- January 16, 2010
HAYWARD, Calif. - Despite a strong showing in the opening half, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team fell to Cal State Monterey Bay, 82-62, on Saturday night at Pioneer Gym.A sluggish second half doomed the Pioneers (0-14, 0-9 CCAA) who gave up 28 points to Otter bench players and shot just 24.2 percent in the final stanza of the loss.
"We are happy to have some players back in the lineup and we need to just be able to get that chemistry with everyone," CSUEB Head Coach Toni West said. "We did a good job rebounding tonight. We're just trying to put it all together as quickly as possible."
Early in the first half, East Bay and CSUMB traded points, as the Pioneers opened the game 3-for-4 from the field. Though the Otters led by as many as eight early on, Cal State East Bay bounced back to tie things up at 15 with 11 minutes to play in the first half before a jumper from junior guard Claudia Nelson gave the Pioneers a 17-15 lead.
Monterey Bay grabbed the momentum back with an 18-4 run that saw junior guard LaShawn Johnson notch six points during the seven-minute span. Cal State East Bay responded, however, holding the Otters scoreless over the final 3:54 and closing the gap to just four points as CSUMB went to the break with a 33-29 advantage.
Cal State East Bay cleaned up on the boards in the first frame, out-rebounding Monterey Bay 27-18. The two squads combined for just 15 turnovers in the half, with Monterey Bay collecting 13 points off the nine East Bay turnovers. Both benches played a big role in the opening half, as the non-starters from both teams combined for 25 first-frame points.
A re-energized Cal State Monterey Bay team emerged from the locker room and jumped out to an 11-point lead while holding the Pioneers without a field goal for over four minutes to start the second frame. A three-pointer from freshman guard Emily Valenziano snapped the scoreless streak before the Otters built a 17-point lead midway through the half.
A complete Cal State East Bay lineup change at the 10:36 mark helped to spark a brief Pioneer comeback effort, as Valenziano, freshman center Marlene MacMillan and junior center Natalie Montes led East Bay on a seven-point scoring run to cut the lead to 10, 57-47, with 9:44 to play in the game. The 10-point deficit would be as close as the Pioneers would get, however, as CSUMB turned the momentum again with an 18-7 run, sparked by three treys, including two from junior guard London Houchin. During the run, the Otters held East Bay to just two field goals over a six-minute span and never looked back after taking a 75-54 lead with 3:34 remaining.
"We know the first year in this conference we're going to go back and forth with our consistency on defense and in transition, but we need to get better at being consistent in the areas where we are strong," West said.
Nelson paced the Pioneers with 19 points, while Valenziano notched 12 points on four-of-10 shooting from three-point range. Freshman center Lauren Lucchesi led the rebounding efforts for the seventh time this season, grabbing 11 boards as the Pioneers out-rebounded the Otters 48-40, marking just the second time this campaign that East Bay has controlled the glass. The Pioneers also saw freshman center Marlene MacMillan return from injury, posting eight points and seven rebounds on three-for-four shooting in just 17 minutes of play.
The Otters had three players hit double digits in scoring, led by Houchin's 16 points and senior forward Veronica Williams' 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. Monterey Bay shot a sparkling 54.8 percent in the second half, helping it finish the game 29-of-61 from the floor in the victory.
Cal State East Bay now heads back out on the road, traveling to Sonoma State and Humboldt State next week. The Pioneers and Seawolves are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park on Thursday.
