Bay Area poet Kim Addonizio will read from her extensive body of work April 13 at Cal State East Bay as a guest of the Distinguished Writers Series.

Born in Bethesda, Md., to a sports-mad family, Addonizio moved to San Francisco in the late 1970s, where she fell in love with poetry and read her work around the city at open mic performances. She recently published her fifth collection, “Lucifer at the Starlite.”

Addonizio's previous collection, “Tell Me,” was a National Book Award Finalist and a Target “Breakout Author” selection, and her first novel, “Little Beauties,” was named a “Best Book of the Month” by Book of the Month Club. Her awards include a two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Commonwealth Club Poetry Medal and the John Ciardi Lifetime Achievement Award.

The free reading will begin at 7 p.m. in the University Library’s Biella Room, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward, and end with a book signing. The series is sponsored by the Department of English, in conjunction with the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Steve Gutierrez, series organizer and professor of English, says, “Kim is a gutsy, sensuous writer full of gritty insight, direct and hard-hitting in her poetry. She'll be a treat to hear, a Bay Area legend in our midst – she'll delight and astound.”

Addonizio’s work has appeared widely in literary journals, anthologies and textbooks. She recently contributed essays to the anthology “Bad Girls and Dirty Words: A Literary Encyclopedia of Sex.” Her word/music CD with Poet Susan Browne is entitled “Swearing, Smoking, Drinking & Kissing.” She teaches in her home in Oakland and around the country at writers’ conferences and festivals.
