Late Pioneer Rally Falls Short in Loss to Chico State

CHICO, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, but fell short in a 10-9 defeat to Chico State on Feb. 14. With the win, Chico State sweeps the four-game series.
Trailing 10-6, the Pioneers made it close in the ninth inning. Charlie Sharrer opened the inning with an infield hit. Josh Rush reached on an error. Richie Gonzalez singled to load the bases. Stephen Gatehouse walked to score Sharrer. The next batter Alex Anicich hit a sacrifice fly scoring pinch runner Brian Engberg with the second run. Devin Grigg followed with a base hit to load the bases. Nick McManus grounded out to first base scoring Gonzalez. Levi Josewski flied out to deep right field ending the game.
The Pioneers scored twice in the second and three more in the fifth inning highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of Gonzalez. Josh Rush added a solo home run, his second of the season, in the seventh inning.
Deven Braden’s grand slam put Chico State ahead 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Gatehouse had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Pioneers. Sharrer was 3-for-5 at the plate while Anicich, Grigg, McManus, and Gonzalez all had two hits.
Cal State East Bay, 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA, will host Simpson University in a three-game series on Feb. 19-20.
