Cal State East Bay will usher in Homecoming 2010 Feb. 22-27 with a week of celebrations and events that demonstrate this year's theme, "Pioneer Pride."

"Homecoming events and activities give students, faculty, staff and the community an opportunity to get involved in campus life by participating in the wide variety of events that are offered," said Marguerite Hinrichs, Director of Student Life and Leadership at CSUEB.

The Pioneer baseball team kicks off the week's festivities at noon Monday, Feb. 22 when it takes on Patten University at Pioneer baseball Field.

On Tuesday Feb. 23, faculty and staff are invited to join in an Office Decorating Contest. Prizes will be awarded to the best-decorated doors and offices on campus. At noon that day, Student Life and Leadership also will host the "East Bay Idol" contest on Agora Stage. The winners will perform the National Anthem live at the Pioneer Homecoming basketball game.

A poster contest for student organizations will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24. Posters entered in the competition will be displayed in Pioneer Gym during Homecoming Week's basketball games with a prize going to the best poster. "Live at Noon" presented by ASI, a live concert outside the Student Union, will begin at 12:30 p.m. The night caps off with the Pioneers basketball teams taking on Humboldt State at Pioneer Gym. The women's game starts at 5:30pm and the men tip off at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for youth under 18. East Bay students receive free admission with student ID.

The Pioneer Bookstore will host the Pioneer Pride Fashion Show Thursday, Feb. 25. Models from departments across campus will take to the catwalk in the latest Pioneer styles, all available at the bookstore. At 7 p.m., ASI will host "Spoken Word Unleashed," a poetry jam, in the University Theater. Admission is free for Cal State East Bay students and $10 for general admission. Following the show, student organizations are invited to the Homecoming Parade Prep Party at Pioneer Heights starting at 9 p.m.

"Obviously as a residence community on campus, we appreciate the history of Cal State East Bay, and Homecoming is part of the tradition," said Director of Student Housing Martin Castillo.  "We are happy to host the Parade Prep Party at Pioneer Heights, and the students are really excited to be part of this homecoming celebration."

Participating student organizations will decorate their floats for the Homecoming Parade while enjoying music and light refreshments.

Events Friday, Feb. 26 kick off at 1 p.m. with the Pioneer softball team taking on Cal State San Bernardino at Pioneer Softball field; admission is free. The Homecoming Parade will begin at 3 p.m. at Pioneer Heights. The parade route will circle campus and end at Pioneer Gym for a Pre-Game Tailgate party, offering complementary food, music, games and prizes. The tailgate, sponsored by ASI, will provide Pioneer fans and students to mix and mingle before the homecoming games.

The Pioneer basketball teams will take on Sonoma State in the Pioneer Pride Homecoming games. The women's team will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the East Bay Idol Contest will sing the National Anthem before the women's game.  Pioneer Athletics will also honor the accomplishments of its senior basketball student athletes with a special Senior Day recognition during the break between the men's and women's games. At halftime during the men's basketball game, members of the 2010 Homecoming Court will be announced.

There will also be a special recognition for the 25th anniversary of the 1985 NCAA Division II West Region Champion Cal State East Bay Men's basketball team.

"Homecoming 2010 should prove a memorable event with the return of an assistant coach and three players from the 1985 Cal State East Bay Men's Basketball NCAA II West Region Championship team," said Sports Information Director Marty Valdez.

Among those to be recognized at the men's game are former assistant basketball coach Bill Vandenburgh, a CSUEB Athletics Hall of Famer; Michael Harris, a Hall of Famer and former career assists leader; Craig Ashmore, a successful basketball coach at Newark Memorial High School; and Ricardo Toyloy, an NCAC All-Conference performer.

The celebration will continue with a Homecoming Party at the Pioneer Heights Dining Commons, with a DJ, food and dancing. Admission is $5.

The Pioneer baseball team will help put finishing touches on Homecoming Week activities when they host Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. The Pioneer softball team will also be in action at 11 a.m. against Cal State San Bernardino. During the afternoon, ASI will present Gospel Fest 2010. The event features the Cal State East Bay Gospel Choir, The San Francisco State Gospel Choir, the UC Berkeley BCM Gospel Choir, recording artist Veronica McWoodson and the Glad Tiding Praise and Worship Team.
