Pioneers Edged By Cal State LA, 70-64

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's basketball team dropped a tough 70-64 CCAA game to visiting Cal State Los Angeles on February 4. There were seven lead changes and the score was tied nine times.
Jawaan Rubin hit a jumper to give the Pioneers a 23-18 advantage with 6:10 left in the first half. The Pioneers maintained their first half lead, 31-26, on a 3-pointer by Melvin Flemings. Carl Hoffman's jumper gave Cal State Los Angeles a 33-31 halftime lead.
The Pioneers regained the lead 46-41, with 12:32 remaining in the second half, on a jumper by Saeed Gaston. Mark Samuels layup gave the Pioneers a 53-45 advantage with 9:16 left. With Cal State East Bay leading 58-56, Cal State Los Angeles went on a 10-0 run in the final four minutes to win the game.
The Pioneers shot 50 percent from the field in the second half while converting 11 of 13 free throws.
Samuels recorded a career- high 24 points on 7-of-9 from the field and 9 of 11 from the free throw line. Gatson scored eight points followed by Donavon Jackson with seven. Cal State Los Angeles had three players score in double figures led by Dwayne Jones and Chris Fields with 14 each.
Cal State Los Angeles improves to 8-7 in CCAA play and 12-8 overall. Cal State East Bay stands at 2-12 in the CCAA and 5-14 for the season. The Pioneers will host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, February 6th at 7:30 p.m.
