Pioneers Drop Tough Decision at San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Pioneer men's basketball team put up a good team effort in a 69-65 defeat to San Francisco State on Feb. 20.

Trailing 36-27 at halftime, the Pioneers closed the gap to 66-61 with 44 second remaining on a layup by Mark Samuels. The second of two free throws by Donavon Jackson made it a 68-63 Gators lead with 11 seconds left. Nefi Perdomo hit a free throw with 10 seconds remaining to extend the Gators advantage to 69-63.  Demitrius Owens made a basket with two seconds left to close the scoring.

Samuels led the Pioneers in scoring with 20 points, following a career-high 30 point performance the night before against Cal State Monterey Bay. Jackson scored 12 points including a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Owens had seven rebounds.

Tim Pratt was the Gators leading scorer with 19 points. Hoskins and Perdomo followed with 13 points each.

San Francisco State is 10-10 in the CCAA and 17-11 overall. Cal State East Bay stands at 2-18 in CCAA play and 5-20 for the season.

The Pioneers will conclude the 2009-10 season with a pair of home games against Humboldt State on February 24 and Sonoma State (Homecoming) on February 26.
