HAYWARD, Calif. - After suffering through rain storms last week, the Cal State East Bay softball team finally opened the season, splitting a doubleheader with San Francisco State. The Pioneers (1-1, 1-1 CCAA) recorded the win in the first game, 4-1, while falling to the Gators, 3-0, in the second contest in their first conference games of the season.

East Bay junior Cat Schorn settled in quickly in the circle, shutting down SFSU through the first four innings. The Bend, Ore., native held the Gators to just one hit and faced the minimum number of batters in each of the first three frames.

After being held hitless through the first two innings by SFSU starter Kendra Wood, the Pioneers put together a three-run third, sparked three straight hits from freshman Emily Montanez, junior Chelsea McEachran and freshman Ashlee Coronado to start off the inning. After Coronado drove in the first run of the game, junior Sarah Hasenfus walked to load the bases for Schorn, who helped out her cause with a sacrifice fly to give East Bay a 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third, senior Rachelle Boone flew out to center, driving in Coronado to give the Pioneers a three-run lead.

The Gators got onto the board in the fifth inning, as Lea Cardenas hit a lead-off homer to left field, her first of the season. After walking the next batter, Schorn got out of the inning with three groundballs to keep the lead at three.

Both Schorn and SFSU reliever Carolyn Knudson finished the game strong, as neither allowed a hit over the final two innings.

Schorn got the win, while going 1-for-3 at the plate and driving in two runs, including the game winner in the third. Meanwhile, Coronado went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Wood got the loss for the Gators, while Cardenas led the offense with a hit, a run and an RBI.

Game two saw SFSU jump out to an early lead and shutdown the Pioneers offensively with stellar pitching. Starter Ashley Jackson held East Bay to just three hits, while striking out five.

The Pioneers had their best chance to score in the second, putting runners on first and third after a one-out double from freshman Dani Foster and a single from freshman Sara Holdridge. The scoring chance was thwarted, however, after the Gators caught East Bay in a pickle on a steal attempt and Jackson got a ground out to end the inning.

Freshman Lauren Zweigle made her first career start for the Pioneers, and despite giving up two runs in the first two innings, settled down to hold the Gators to just two hits and one run - a lead-off homerun in the fifth - over the final five innings. The San Jose native struck out the side in the sixth and sat down four of the final six batters on strikes, totaling seven strikeouts in the loss.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow, hosting the final two games of the series with San Francisco State. East Bay will hold its Swing for Life event tomorrow which will include a silent auction following the games with all proceeds going to breast cancer research and awareness programs. Saturday's doubleheader action will get underway at noon at Pioneer Softball Field.
