HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team dropped both games of its Saturday doubleheader with San Francisco State to finish the series 1-3 against the Gators. The Pioneers fell in game one, 4-2, before suffering an 8-0 loss in six innings that saw SFSU notch seven runs in the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule.
Game one saw the Gators jump out to an early lead in the second inning. After a double from left fielder Danielle Mestas, right fielder Alyssa Esquibel reached on a fielder's choice to put two on for Jessica Delgado. The second baseman promptly drove a fly ball to straightaway center where it just cleared the fence for a three-run homer, giving SFSU and starting pitcher Ashley Jackson a 3-0 lead to work with.
Cal State East Bay was kept nearly silent offensively by Jackson again, putting just four baserunners on in the first five innings. Jackson sat down seven on strikes in the first five, notching a pair of strikeouts in both the first and fifth frames. The Gator offense helped Jackson out again in the fifth, adding another run in small ball after earning a walk, moving the
The Pioneers finally got to Jackson in the sixth, getting on the board for the first time in 13 innings, spanning back to the fifth inning of Friday's first game. Junior second baseman Sarah Hasenfus got hit by Jackson to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior pitcher Cat Schorn. Pinch hitter Sara Holdridge doubled to drive in Hasenfus before Jackson struck out a pinch-hitting Breezy Johnson to bring senior designated player Sarah Davini up with two outs and a runner on second. Davini picked up Johnson, doubling in pinch runner Nicole Alameda to cut the SFSU lead to two. With another runner in scoring position, Jackson shut down the two-out rally with her ninth strikeout of the game to end the inning.
After Schorn sat down the side in order in the top of the seventh, the Pioneers looked ready to continue closing the gap in their last ups. Facing reliever Kendra Wood, freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado walked with two outs before Hasenfus singled to bring the game-winning run to the plate in the form of pinch hitter Mary Ogden. Wood, however, sat down Ogden on strikes to close out the win and earn the save.
Jackson earned the win, striking out nine and allowing two runs on five hits, while Schorn took her first loss of the season, giving up three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Delgado led the Gators, going 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI. Mestas had a quality game at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Hasenfus, Davini and Montanez each went 1-for-3 in the game, with Hasenfus notching a run and Davini driving in one.
Game two began as a defensive struggle, with the two teams combining for just five hits through the first five innings. East Bay freshman Lauren Zweigle got into a rhythm early, striking out five of the first 10 batters she faced, allowing just one hit in the first three frames. Her counterpart for the Gators, senior Vanessa Truan, was equally impressive, striking out four and giving up one hit during the same span.
SFSU got on the board first again, as third baseman Lea Cardenas hit a two-out solo homer in the fourth to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers looked set to answer in the fifth, as third baseman Devon Mercurio walked and Schorn hoofed out an infield single. An error on the throw to first moved pinch runner Tia Wunder to third, however Truan got a fly ball, a strikeout and a ground out to get out of the jam.
Leading 1-0, the Gators blew the game open in the sixth, scoring seven runs on five hits. The Pioneer defense struggled to get a handle on the ball, committing three errors, while a three-run jack from freshman Heather Jensen capped the inning for SFSU and gave it an 8-0 lead. With East Bay unable to get anything going in the bottom half, the Gators claimed the eight-run rule victory to take the series and improve to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Truan earned the win, striking out give and allowing just three hits in six innings. Zweigle struck out seven, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in the loss. Esquibel had quite the afternoon, going three for three with a run, while Cardenas notched two hits, two runs and two RBI and Jensen got the most out of her one hit, scoring a run and adding three RBI on the homerun. Nikki Freiburg paced East Bay with a 2-for-3 performance in game two.
Cal State East Bay returns to action next weekend, traveling to UC San Diego for a pair of doubleheaders. The Pioneers and Tritons are set to get underway with the first game of Friday's doubleheader at 1 p.m. in La Jolla.
