LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team dropped both games of the series-opening doubleheader with UC San Diego on Friday afternoon in La Jolla. The Pioneers (1-5, 1-5 CCAA) stranded 11 runners in the pair of losses, falling to the Tritons 9-0 in the first game and 3-1 in the second on the first day of their initial CCAA road trip.
UCSD got things going early in the first game, putting up four runs in the second inning. A bases-loaded single from junior Rhiannon Ousley drove in freshman Nicole Spangler to score the first run of the game and load the bases for junior Jennifer De Fazio whose sacrifice drove in another run. With two on and two out, Kellin Haley's infield single drove in two more runs before she was thrown out trying to take second, capping the inning and giving sophomore pitcher Camille Gaito a 4-0 lead to work with.
The four-run advantage was all Gaito needed, as she allowed just three hits and the Pioneers left four runners on base over the final three innings. Meanwhile, a five-run UCSD fourth gave the Tritons all the insurance they needed and the eight-run rule victory in five innings.
Ousley and Haley both went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI for UCSD, while De Fazio and Gabriel drove in two runs apiece. Gaito got the shutout win, allowing five hits and striking out three. Junior pitcher Cat Schorn took the loss for East Bay, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
The second matchup of the day saw both UCSD pitcher Christine Zankich and Pioneer freshman Lauren Zweigle get off to great starts through the first three innings. Zankich faced just one over the minimum, while Zweigle walked just one and struck out two.
The Pioneers broke through the early no-hitter in the fourth inning as senior Sarah Davini and junior Nikki Freiberg hit back-to-back singles with one down. UCSD got out of it, however, as catcher Nicole Saari caught Davini stealing and pitch hitter Breezy Johnson struck out to end the inning.
The bottom of the fourth saw the Tritons break through as well, putting their first run on the board after a bunt single from Saari drove in Gabriel who reached on an error. Zweigle regained control, though, striking out Spangler and getting a ground out to get out of the inning with UCSD leading 1-0.
East Bay scored its first run in more than 15 innings in the top half of the fifth. Junior Dani Foster led off with a single and pinch runner Renaye Gamson moved to third on a double from freshman Devon Mercurio. Senior catcher Rachelle Boone drove in Gamson to draw even, 1-1, before the Triton defense ended the scoring threat.
After sitting down the Tritons in their half of the fifth, Zweigle entered the bottom of the sixth having allowed just one run on two hits. With the game on the line, UCSD put together what would be a decisive half inning in the sixth. A one-out double from junior Kris Lesovsky followed by a triple down the left field line from Saari drove in the eventual game-winning run. Spangler added the insurance run, driving in pinch runner Lyndsay Gaylord with a single down the line to take a 3-1 lead into the seventh.
A one-out walk to Mercurio in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Boone. However, the Brentwood native reached on a fielder's choice before Zankich got Schorn to ground out to close out the victory.
Freiberg went 2-for-3 on the day to lead the Pioneers, while Mercurio was 1-for-1 with two walks in the loss. Despite allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out four, Zweigle took her third loss of the season. Zankich earned the win, allowing five hits and one run in seven innings. Saari's 2-for-3, two RBI day and Lesovsky's 2-for-3, one run performance paced the Tritons.
The two teams finish out the series tomorrow, meeting for another doubleheader at 11 a.m. at Triton Softball Field.
