- February 18, 2010
HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team takes to the road for the first time this season, traveling to La Jolla to face UC San Diego in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. The Pioneers (1-3, 1-3 CCAA) will open the series on Friday at 1 p.m. before wrapping things up with another set of games on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Cal State East Bay will be looking to bounce back after dropping the final three games of its season-opening series with San Francisco State last week. The Pioneers kicked off the campaign with a 3-1 win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader, thanks in part to a quality pitching performance from junior starter Cat Schorn. The Bend, Ore., native allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings of work, while also going 1-for-2 at the plate and driving in a pair of runs, including the game winner.
The Gator pitching staff stifled the Pioneers in the final three games of the series, allowing just two runs and posting 21 strikeouts in 20 innings of work to claim the series victory. East Bay was shutout in two of the final three games, while SFSU pitcher Ashley Jackson finished the weekend among the leaders in the CCAA lead with 17 strikeouts in her two wins.
With one series down, the Pioneers are led by freshman Sara Holdridge, who made two starts at designated player last weekend, batting .500 with a double and an RBI. Meanwhile Schorn went three-for-nine with a double and two RBI in four starts. In the circle, Schorn, freshman starter Lauren Zweigle and junior reliever Dani Foster combined for 18 strikeouts and a 3.33 earned run average. Zweigle's 14 strikeouts on the weekend are good for sixth in the CCAA.
UC San Diego enters the weekend with a 3-3 record overall and a 2-2 mark in conference play. The Tritons are coming off a midweek split with Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday in non-conference action. UCSD fell to the Coyotes 3-1 before bouncing back for a 7-5 victory in the late game. Last weekend, the Tritons earned a split with Chico State to open the conference slate.
Junior outfielder Kris Lesovsky is pacing UC San Diego so far, batting .520 in eight starts, scoring five runs and driving in four. Senior catcher Nicole Saari jons Lesovsky in leading the Tritons, going 12-for-25 and driving in 10 runs through the first eight games. In the circle, Camille Gaito is 3-2 on the year but boasts a 0.42 earned run average and 20 strikeouts, good for second and first in the CCAA.
UCSD Head Coach Patti Gerckens is in her 18th season at the helm, guiding the Tritons to four NCAA West Regional appearances in the last nine seasons and compiling a record of 413-403 all time. Cal State East Bay holds the 2-0 advantage in the all-time series with UC San Diego, with the teams' last meeting coming in April of 1992.
The Pioneers and Tritons are set to get underway on Friday at 1 p.m. at RIMAC Fields on the UCSD campus. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch. Live scoring will be available online .
