Pioneers Down No. 17 Cal State Bakersfield, Fall to No. 9 Hartwick

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team posted its second victory over a nationally-ranked opponent this season, topping No. 17 Cal State Bakersfield, 10-9 in overtime, on the first day of the Roadrunner Invite. The Pioneers (2-4) split their two matches on Saturday, falling to No. 9 Hartwick, 14-10, in the early game before the afternoon win over the host Roadrunners.

East Bay and Bakersfield kept things close throughout the match, with neither team ever leading by more than two. The Pioneers kicked off the scoring with a goal from junior driver Tristan Kennedy at the 4:02 mark in the first. The Roadrunners answered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead, however CSUEB grabbed back the lead with back-to-back goals from senior utility Jenna Casady and junior driver Danielle Comforti, taking a 3-2 advantage into the second period.

Both teams added just a single goal in the second frame, with East Bay taking a 4-2 lead less than a minute in on a score from junior two meter Liz Warren. The Roadrunners responded midway through the quarter to draw back within one. Bakersfield goalie Megan Pezzolla stopped a Pioneer penalty shot with 2:11 remaining to send East Bay to the half with a 4-3 advantage.

The third quarter saw the Roadrunners step up and out-score the Pioneers 3-1. A goal from Sam Shead less than 30 seconds into the period knotted things up at four goals apiece before Alyson Moss gave Bakersfield its first lead since the 2:35 mark in the first quarter. The Pioneers pulled back to 5-5 with its lone goal of the quarter from Warren, however, Bakersfield ended the period with a 6-5 lead thanks to a Becky Seelos goal with 2 minutes left.

The Pioneers pulled even in a fourth quarter that saw no kickouts for either team. After goals from Comforti and freshman utility Claire Pierce, East Bay took a 7-6 lead with 4:55 left. A goal from C.J. Longeuay tied the game at seven, sending the teams into overtime.

The first overtime period saw East Bay take control, as Pierce scored her second of the match and Warren added her third to give the Pioneers a 9-7 advantage. Despite two goals from the Roadrunners in the final overtime, East Bay held on, getting the eventual game winner from Kennedy with 51 seconds remaining in the period.

Cal State East Bay goalie Emily Hucal posted five saves on the day to earn her second win over a ranked opponent and the Pioneer offense was led by Warren's three scores. Pezzolla had five saves of her own for the Roadrunners, while Shead, Moss and Torres each contributed a pair of goals.

In Saturday's first game, East Bay battled a tough Hartwick team that is off to its best start in program history. The Hawks (6-1) got out to a 6-4 lead in the first quarter, getting three goals each from Christina Evans and Allyssa Analytis. On the other end, the Pioneers opened with a penalty shot goal from  Casady and fought back to within one after trailing 5-3, getting a goal from Pierce to close the gap to 5-4 before allowing a Hawk score in the final two minutes of the opening period.

The teams went goal-for-goal in the second frame, with Hartwick opening a 7-4 lead before Pierce answered with her second goal of the day. After the Hawks' Jessica McKee scored her second of the period, Comforti converted on a penalty to keep the Pioneers within two, 8-6. Warren closed the gap to one with 3:18 left before the break, however, Hartwick regained momentum with a buzzer beating goal from Hanneke Alferink to take a 9-7 lead into halftime.

The Hawks out-scored East Bay 4-2 in a decisive third quarter that saw Siann Ells-Tewhiu notch three goals for Hartwick, including a pair just 30 seconds apart to open the period. Though the Pioneers answered with goals from junior utility Whitney Bell and senior driver Lauren Griffin, they trailed 13-9 going into the final quarter.

The Pioneers and Hawks combined for just two goals in the fourth, as East Bay closed the gap to 13-10 with another score for Casady before Ells-Tewhiu capped the win with her fourth goal of the day.

Ells-Tewhiu paced the Hawks with her four scores, while both Analytis and Evans added three apiece. Goalie Jessica Dorman posted five saves including a fourth-quarter penalty shot stop. Bell, Casady, Comforti and Pierce each posted a pair of goals for CSUEB in the loss, while senior starting goalie Merrill made two saves and Hucal made five stops after entering in the third.

Warren, Pierce and Comforti each had stellar performances for the Pioneers on the day, posting four goals apiece. Casady added three of her own to bring her season total to a team-leading 12 goals. In goal, Hucal is proving to be a key asset, notching 10 saves on the day and starting in both of the Pioneers' victories so far this season.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow at the Roadrunner Invite, taking on Colorado State at 7:30 a.m. and familiar foe Santa Clara at 2 p.m. The Rams (2-5) have taken two out of three at the tournament so far, topping Cal Lutheran and Cal State Monterey Bay, while falling to the Roadrunners. The Broncos (5-4), who East Bay downed at the Northern California Invite two weeks ago, posted wins over Concordia and No. 16 Cal Baptist on Saturday.
