CSUEB To Cap Season Against Humboldt and Sonoma for Homecoming Week
- February 23, 2010
HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team will close out the season this week at home, playing host to Humboldt State and Sonoma State for Homecoming Week. The Pioneers (1-24, 1-19 CCAA) take on the Jacks on Wednesday night before meeting the Seawolves on Friday for the 2010 Homecoming Game and Senior Night.
Cal State East Bay is coming off a pair of losses at Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State last weekend. The Pioneers are looking to close the season on a good note by snapping their six-game losing streak after falling by a combined score of just 18 last weekend.
Junior guard Claudia Nelson continues to lead East Bay, averaging 14 points and 2.2 assists per game. Her 3.2 steals per contest are the most in the CCAA and would rank her among the top 15 players in Division II this season, if CSUEB was eligible to join the statistical rankings. She also ranks sixth in the conference in scoring, and among the top 15 in free throw percentage, assists and minutes played.
Junior guard Andrea Rodriguez and freshman center Marlene MacMillan are second and third in scoring, averaging 8.4 and 8.2 points per game, respectively. MacMillan has been impressive of late, averaging 9.4 points and 6.4 rebounds over the last 12 games since returning from injury. MacMillan and freshman center Lauren Lucchesi are leading the Pioneers on the glass, with Lucchesi pulling down 7.4 rebounds per game, good for eighth in the CCAA. The pair has combined to lead the team in rebounds in all but four games this season.
Humboldt State comes into the week tied for third in the conference and looking to improve their standing in hopes of getting a higher seed in the CCAA Tournament. The Jacks (16-8, 14-6) are coming off an 0-2 weekend at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus last week, and have lost three of their last five games. HSU leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage and is second in the CCAA in field goal percentage and scoring offense, averaging nearly 70 points per contest.
The Jacks are led by senior center Brittney Taylor and senior guard Andrea Bobic, who average 18.4 and 12.8 points per game, respectively, with Taylor leading the conference in scoring. Sophomore forward Bree Halsey paces Humboldt on the glass, pulling down 8.9 boards per game to rank fourth in the conference. Taylor has been a Jack of all trades for HSU, shooting 52.4 percent from the field and averaging 2.3 steals per game, both among the top five in the conference. In their first meeting with the Pioneers this season, the Jacks posted a commanding 82-43 victory on Jan. 23 in Arcata.
Sonoma State brings a 10-15 overall record and an 8-12 mark in conference play into the final two games of the regular season. The Seawolves have lost four of their last five, including back-to-back losses at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus last weekend.
SSU is led by senior forward Stephanie Barnes' 8.2 points per game, while she and sophomore center Christy Shreve share the team lead with five rebounds per contest. Shreve also leads the team with 16 blocks on the season. Sonoma State eked out a 58-51 win over the Pioneers in the teams' first meeting this season, led by sophomore guard Jaclyn Bisordi's 12 points and Barnes' 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Pioneers will celebrate Homecoming during Friday's doubleheader finale against the Seawolves. A winner from the Cal State East Bay Idol competition will perform the national anthem, the 1985 NCAA West Region Champion men's basketball team will be honored and the 2010 Homecoming Court will be introduced. Fans are also invited to attend a pre-game tailgate party at Pioneer Heights before the Homecoming Parade will lead the way to Pioneer Gym for the games.
Friday night is not only Homecoming, but will also mark the final game in the red and black for Pioneer seniors Colleen Cooley and Megan Christian. Cooley, a forward out of Glen Park, Calif., has averaged nearly 20 minutes and 4.5 rebounds per game during her two seasons at Cal State East Bay. A key reserve, Cooley finishes her time as a Pioneer with career highs of 14 rebounds, six assists and four blocks.
Though Christian has struggled with injuries throughout her time at East Bay, she has been a key component off the court and on the sidelines for the Pioneers. Christian also spent two seasons at shooting guard for Los Medanos College prior to arriving at Cal State East Bay.
Wednesday's matchup with Humboldt State is set to begin at 5:30 p.m., while Friday's Homecoming Game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip off at Pioneer Gym. Live stats for both games will be available online .
