Pioneers To Kick Off Five-Game Road Trip at Chico, Stanislaus
- February 11, 2010
HAYWARD, Calif. - Just a week removed from its first win of the season, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team will be looking to find success again this weekend, as it travels to Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus to kick off a five-game road trip. The Pioneers (1-19, 1-14 CCAA) face the Wildcats on Friday and the Warriors on Saturday in the first two of five games over the course of the next eight days.
Cal State East Bay is coming off its first split weekend of the season after toppling Cal State LA, 69-68 in overtime on Feb. 4 before falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 6. In the win, the Pioneers battled back from a 14-point second-half deficit, going on a 20-7 run to close regulation and send the game into overtime. Despite leading by as many as six in the extra period, East Bay made things interesting, allowing the Golden Eagles to close the gap to three with nine seconds remaining and giving up a buzzer beating jumper from just inside the three-point line to hang on for the win.
Junior guard Claudia Nelson led the Pioneers in the victory, scoring 14 of her 18 points in the final 25 minutes of the game. Meanwhile, freshman center Marlene MacMillan put together her second double-double of the season, posting 15 points and bringing down 11 boards. Junior forward Natalie Montes added 11 of her own, scoring nine in the second half and overtime period. The Pioneer defense made the difference in the game, forcing 35 LA turnovers, blocking four shots and holding the Golden Eagles to just one three.
Nelson continues to pace East Bay with 13.2 points per game along with 3.1 steals per contest, the former ranking among the top 10 in the league and the latter leading the CCAA. Nelson would also rank among the top 20 pickpockets in Division II, if the Pioneers were eligible to be included in the national statistics rankings. Junior guard Andrea Rodriguez is second on the squad in scoring at 8.8 points per game, while MacMillan is making her presence felt lately. After missing 10 games with an injury, the Tracy native is averaging 10.8 points and 6.4 boards over the last five games, moving into third on the team with a season average of 7.6 points per contest. As a team, the Pioneers rank among the CCAA's top six in assists, steals, offensive rebounds and three pointers.
Chico State (13-8, 10-6) enters the weekend in sixth place in the CCAA standings and are coming off back-to-back wins over Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Stanislaus. The Wildcats are led by junior guard Natasha Smith's 10.8 points per game and senior forward Christine Vest's 6.2 boards per contest, while sophomore guard Synchro Bull has led the team in scoring in each of the last three games, dropping 20 and 18, respectively, on the Coyotes and Warriors. Chico posted a 78-60 win over the Pioneers in the teams' first meeting of the season on Jan. 9, as sophomore forward Pauline Ferrall led the Wildcats with 14 points.
Cal State Stanislaus comes into the weekend with a 5-15 overall record and a 4-14 mark in conference play. The Warriors have dropped four straight, including a 14-point loss to Chico and a 21-point loss to Cal Poly Pomona in their last two contests. CSUS is led by senior guard Alishea Kelly and junior forward Katie Busi, who average 16 and 13.4 points per contest, respectively. The pair have combined to lead the team in scoring 18 times this season, while Busi is the Warriors' leading rebounder, averaging 10.3 boards per game, good for second in the conference. In its first meeting with Cal State East Bay this season, Stanislaus posted a 93-64 win, led by Busi's 14-point, 21-rebound double-double.
