CSUEB Caps Final Road Trip at Monterey Bay, San Francisco State

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team will close out its last road trip of the season this weekend, traveling to Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. The Pioneers (1-22, 1-17 CCAA) will play their fourth game in seven days against the Otters on Friday before capping the weekend with their final road game of the year, a "Battle of the Bay" rematch, against the Gators.

East Bay is coming off three losses in the last seven days, the latest a 96-73 loss to No. 11 UC San Diego on Tuesday. Despite the loss, the Pioneers recorded season-highs in points and field goal percentage, shooting 47.6 percent from the floor. Junior guard Claudia Nelson's 22 points and nine field goals were both season-highs as well, while junior guard Andrea Rodriguez contributed 17 points and senior forward Colleen Cooley dished out six assists, another season-high for East Bay.

Nelson leads the Pioneers with 13.6 points per game, ranking seventh in the conference. The Daly City native is also the pacing the CCAA in steals, averaging three picks per contest which would be among the top 25 in Division II if East Bay were eligible to be ranked. Freshman center Lauren Lucchesi is leading the Pioneers with 7.5 boards per game, while fellow freshman center Marlene MacMillan has made her presence felt in 10 games since returning from injury, averaging 9.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game during that span.

Cal State Monterey Bay comes into Friday's meeting with six wins in its last 10 games, including a 69-47 victory over Cal State LA on Feb. 13. With the season coming to a close, the Otters (15-7, 11-7) are looking to secure a spot in the CCAA Tournament and enter the week in fifth place in the league standings with four games to play.

Veronica Williams and Helen Suarez lead CSUMB with 12.1 and 10.3 points per game, respectively, while Julie Heurung's 7.5 rebounds per game pace the Otters and rank seventh in the CCAA. In the teams' first meeting of the season, Monterey Bay came away with an 82-62 victory in Hayward.

San Francisco State comes into the weekend with a 13-13 overall record and 9-9 mark in conference play. The Gators are riding a five-game winning streak ahead of their first game of the weekend against No. 11 UCSD on Friday night. SFSU notched a 70-62 victory over the Pioneers in the teams' first matchup this season.

San Francisco State is led by Donisha Tate's 11.6 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, the latter ranking eighth in Division II. As a team, the Gators rank third in the nation in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 32.8 percent shooting from the field this season.

The Pioneers and Otters are set to get underway on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Seaside. Saturday's "Battle of the Bay" with SFSU is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip as well. Live stats for Friday's game will be available , while Saturday's live stats are accessible .
