- February 16, 2010
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Despite notching a season-high in scoring, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team dropped a 96-73 decision to No. 11 UC San Diego in its third game in five days on Tuesday night. The Pioneers (1-22, 1-17 CCAA) shot a season-high 47.6 percent from the field and were led by junior guard Claudia Nelson's 22 points in the loss.
The Pioneers kept things close early in the first half, trading buckets with the Tritons for the first six minutes. After leading by three to open the game, East Bay fought back from a six-point deficit in the first three minutes to close the UCSD advantage to one, 11-10, with 15:37 to play in the opening frame. The Tritons extended their lead with an 11-1 run ending at the 10:14 mark.
East Bay closed the gap back down to seven twice over the next four minutes, eventually trailing 30-23 with six minutes to play in the half. UCSD grabbed back momentum, however, finishing the first frame with a 20-6 run sparked by a lay up by Annette Ilg followed by back-to-back threes from Chelsea Carlisle and Ilg. The Pioneers turned the ball over five times during that span to close the half trailing 50-29.
Though East Bay knocked down 50 percent of its shots from the field in the second half, UC San Diego demonstrated why it is ranked 11th in the nation, maintaining at least a 10-point lead throughout the half. The Pioneers did even things out in the final frame, nearly matching the Tritons with 22 points in the paint, 14 points off turnovers and 18 points from bench players.
The Pioneers started the half trailing by 25 in the first minute, but went to work, whittling the lead down to 10 over the next eight minutes while forcing eight Triton turnovers. The 29-13 run saw Nelson score 12 of her 16 second-half points and junior guard Andrea Rodriguez post seven points to cut the UCSD lead to 67-57.
Despite cutting the lead to just 10, the Pioneers could not get any closer, as San Diego outscored the Pioneers 29-16 over the final 11 minutes, finishing with their highest point total of the season. Though East Bay went 17-for-34 in the half, the Tritons did one better, hitting 55.6 percent of its shots and 13 of its 19 free throws.
Nelson paced the Pioneers for the 14th time this season, going 9-for-18 from the field. Her 22 points and nine field goals are both season highs for the Pioneers. Rodriguez joined Nelson in double figures, posting 17 points, while senior forward Colleen Cooley dished out six assists on the night, another season high for East Bay. Freshman center Marlene MacMillan led the Pioneers with seven boards and four steals, while the East Bay defense forced 27 UCSD turnovers.
Carlisle led a quartet of Tritons in double figures with 22 points of her own, while Tiffany Hunter, Ilg and Daisy Feder notched 21, 13 and 10 points, respectively. Ilg and Hunter each posted a double-double, with Hunter pulling down 10 boards and Ilg grabbing 11 to lead UCSD to a dominating performance on the glass, out-rebounding CSUEB 47-29.
The Pioneers return to action in just three days, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 19. East Bay will play its fourth game in seven days and its penultimate contest of its final road trip of the season, tipping of at 5:30 p.m. in Seaside.
