- March 18, 2010
Cal State East Bay celebrates 25 years of its annual Jazz Festival April 16 with music by the Tim Armacost Quartet. The 8 p.m. performance in the University Theatre, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., will also feature the work of the Cal State East Bay Jazz Ensemble, directed by Johannes Wallmann, assistant professor of music.
A tenor saxophonist with a “big soulful sound” (Seattle Times), Armacost has toured extensively throughout Europe, Japan, India, and the United States. Jazz Times Magazine called him “a modern romantic whose heart-on-sleeve declamations pulse with raw emotions.”
"Having the Tim Armacost Quartet at our festival represents a wonderful opportunity for our students to perform with some of the most accomplished musicians of the New York jazz scene." said Wallmann.
Rounding out the quartet are the musicians Jazz Improv Magazine called “an exceptional group with which Armacost has been able to work on a regular basis for a while” — pianist Bruce Barth, who has played with Terence Blanchard, Gil Evans, Slide Hampton and Art Farmer; bassist Kenny Davis, who has backed Freddie Hubbard, Cassandra Wilson, Abbey Lincoln and Diane Reeves; and jazz drum legend Billy Hart, who performed with Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Eddie Harris, Pharaoh Sanders, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tuner and Stan Getz.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors and youth, or $10 with CSUEB ID; tickets may be reserved online at or by phone, (510) 885-3167. Additional information can be found on the music department's Web site,
