Cal State East Bay Splits Doubleheader with Sonoma State

HAYWARD, Calif. - In a wild afternoon and night of CCAA baseball on Sunday, Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State played 20 innings and eight hours of baseball, eventually splitting the series-capping doubleheader at Pioneer field. The Pioneers won the first game 11-10 while the Seawolves captured the second contest 9-8 in 11 innings.
Cal State East Bay scored six runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead in the first game. Josh Rush, Charlie Sharrer and Richie Gonzalez each had run scoring doubles in the third.
Alex Anicich and Nick McManus each drove in a run as the Pioneers increased their lead to 9-0 in the fifth inning.
The Seawolves scored three runs in the seventh highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Kyle Jones.
Cal State East Bay held a 10-3 advantage after eight innings. Sonoma State rallied with seven runs in the ninth inning on two hits. Cameron Cook tied the game with a three-run triple. Cook was stranded at third as Pioneer hurler Devin Grigg retired the next three Sonoma hitters.
Stephen Gatehouse, who was 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored, hit a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence to give the Pioneers the 11-10 victory.
Pioneer starting hurler John Volk had his best outing of the season as he allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings. McManus had two hits and three RBIs while Sharrer drove in a pair of runs. Jones had four RBIS for the Seawolves.
In the second game, Sonoma State took a 5-2 lead in the fifth. The Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Grigg doubled scoring Sharrer who singled with one out.
Cal State East Bay took a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning. Sharrer drove in two runs with a single while Grigg had a sacrifice fly driving in the lead run.
The Seawolves regained the lead in the eighth highlighted by a three-run triple by Max Shupe. Trailing 8-6, the Pioneers tied the game in the eighth inning on a two-run homer by Gatehouse.
Sonoma State pushed across an unearned run in the 11th inning to take the second game.
Gatehouse was 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. In the doubleheader, Gatehouse was 7-for-10 with six runs scored, three RBIs, and two home runs. Sharrer drove in three runs while Levi Josewski had two hits and scored twice. Grigg allowed no earned runs with two strikeouts in three innings of relief.
Cal State East Bay, 6-18 in CCAA play and 10-21-1 overall, will host Patten University on March 31 at 1:30 p.m.
