Pioneers Take Series Finale to Earn Split with Stanislaus

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team improved to 2-6 in CCAA play following a 7-6 home victory over Cal State Stanislaus on March 1. Cal State East Bay finishes with a series split with the Warriors after falling in the conclusion of game three, 11-6, earlier on Monday.
Cal State Stanislaus opened the scoring in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Corey Conflenti his third of the series.
The Pioneers responded with three runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a Devin Grigg two-run homer and an RBI single by Aaron Brown.
Cal State East Bay extended its lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning with three runs on four hits. Grigg and Nick McManus had run scoring singles.
Trailing 7-2, Stanislaus State rallied with two runs in the seventh inning and single runs in the eighth and ninth. The Warriors left the tying run on second in the ninth inning.
Pioneer hurler Aaron Hannigan picked up his first win of the season. In seven innings, Hannigan allowed four runs on three hits and recorded eight strikeouts. Grigg picked up his second save of the season.
McManus and Charlie Sharrer each had three hits for the Pioneers. Levi Josewski was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Stephen Gatehouse also had two hits. The Pioneers had 16 hits in the victory.
In game three, the Warriors scored five times in the first inning, and three more in the fifth and sixth innings en route to an 11-6 victory.
Cal State East Bay took a 6-5 lead by scoring five runs in the fifth inning, with the big blow a grand slam off the bat of Nick McManus.
Casey Filkins and Kory Vitato had RBI singles as Stanislaus State regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Warriors added three insurance runs in the sixth inning before the game was suspended due to darkness. Warrior pitcher Phillip Quade faced four batters in the top of the seventh to conclude the game in the early afternoon Monday at East Bay.
McManus had four RBI while John Howard was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in. Alex Anicich also drove in a run.
Cal State East Bay will host U.C. San Diego in a four-game series on March 5-7.
