Cal State East Bay Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader with SFSU

HAYWARD, Calif. - Following a tough defeat in Friday's series opener, the Pioneer baseball team took both games of a doubleheader, 12-11 and 4-2, from visiting San Francisco State on Saturday.

In game one, Nick McManus had a two-run double while James McShane and Aaron Brown each had RBI singles to ignite a four-run, first inning for the Pioneers. East Bay extended its lead to 8-3 with a four-run second highlighted by a McShane three-run homer.

Trailing 10-4, the Gators rallied with four-runs in the sixth with the big blow coming in the form of Nick Bowerman's three-run homer.

Jake Walter hit a two-run single as the Pioneers added two critical insurance runs in the seventh inning to lead 12-8.

San Francisco State scored three runs and left the tying run at third in the ninth inning.

Pioneer hurler Paul Jinkens improved to 3-1 as he allowed seven earned runs and recorded eight strikeouts in eight innings. Devin Grigg recorded his fourth save of the season. McShane and Walter drove in four and three runs respectively. McManus had two RBIs.

In the second game, the Pioneers received a strong pitching performance from Aaron Hannigan. The senior from Martinez went the distance, allowing one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts.

The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the second as Stephen Gatehouse had a two-run single scoring McShane and Charlie Sharrer.

With the score tied 2-2, the Pioneers scored twice in the fifth as Sharrer drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single. Sharrer was 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.

Cal State East Bay improves to 5-14 in CCAA play and 8-17-1 overall. San Francisco State stands at 4-11 in CCAA action and 10-16 for the season.

The four-game series will conclude on Sunday with a single game at San Francisco State beginning at noon.
