Cal State East Bay Falls in Series Finale at SFSU

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -
The Pioneer baseball team lost to San Francisco State by the score of 5-2 in the final game of a four-game series on March 21. The two teams split the four-game series with San Francisco State outscoring Cal State East Bay by a narrow 22-21 margin in the four contests.

Cal State East Bay scored early in the first inning as Nick McManus doubled to drive in Stephen Gatehouse who opened the frame with a base hit. Devin Grigg’s double scored Alex Anicich as the Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 in the third.

The Gators scored in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Greg Kline and scored four runs in the following three innings to secure the victory.

Pioneer starting hurler John Volk allowed four earned runs with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Reliever Rich Kemp pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

Charlie Sharrer was 2-for-4 at the plate while Anicich had a pair of hits with a run scored. McManus also had two hits.

San Francisco State is now 5-11 in CCAA play and 11-16 overall. Cal State Bay stands at 5-15 in CCAA action and 8-18-1 overall.

The Pioneers will host Academy of Art University on March 23 at 2 p.m.
