Pioneers Swept by Sonoma State in Doubleheader Action

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team dropped both ends of the doubleheader to Sonoma State 5-3 and 7-2 on March 27.
In the first game, Sonoma State built a 4-0 lead in the second inning highlighted by Erik Hansen’s two-run double. Hansen added another run scoring double in the seventh as the Seawolves led 5-0.
The Pioneers made a game of it in the ninth inning. Nick McManus opened the inning with a double and one out later scored on a Charlie Sharrer double. Devin Grigg hit the Pioneers third consecutive double scoring Sharrer. Grigg came in to score on a single off the bat of James McShane. With one out and the tying run at the plate, the next two Pioneer hitters made outs to end the game.
East Bay pitcher Matt McCormick hurled a complete game allowing two earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts.
In the second game, the Pioneers trailed 3-0 before scoring their first run in the fifth inning. Grigg singled, advanced to third on two stolen bases, and scored on an infield single by Richie Gonzalez.
In the sixth, the Pioneers closed the gap to 3-2. Sonoma State scored four runs to put the game away.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, March 28 at Cal State East Bay. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
