2009-10 Cal State East Bay Season Recap

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 campaign with a 6-21 record. Cal State East Bay finished 12th with a record of 3-19 in the CCAA. Among the three Pioneer conference wins were a pair of overtime victories against Sonoma State. Seven of the Pioneer defeats in conference play were by 10 points or less.

As a team the Pioneers averaged 60.8 points while shooting 39.2 percent from the field. The Pioneers had 318 offensive rebounds compared to 303 for their opponents.

Freshman Mark Samuels was the Pioneers leading scorer with a 9.7 point per game average. Samuels scored in double figures 10 times during the 2009-10 campaign including a season-high 30 points against Cal State Monterey Bay. Jawaan Rubin averaged 6.5 points a game and scored 10 or more points in six contests. He recorded a season-high 23 points against Sonoma State. 

Donavon Jackson averaged 5.8 points per contest followed by Frankie McWhirt and Demitrius Owens at 5.6 and 5.5 points per game respectively. Owens had a team-high 13 blocked shots. Jacob Noisat led the Pioneers on the boards with a 4.2 rebounding average. 

Jun Uchida, who became the all-time assist leader in Cal State East Bay history with 341, averaged a team-best 3.1 assists this season. Uchida had six assists in three games during the 2009-10 campaign.

Senior Scott Knox established the Pioneer all-time three point record with 140.

In CCAA play, the Pioneers ranked 11th in scoring offense with an average of 60.5 points a game. The Pioneers were fifth in offensive rebounds at 10.7 rebounds per game and seventh in assists (11.5 assists per game). Cal State East Bay was ninth in free throw percentage at 66.7 percent.

Samuels ranked 25th in scoring with a 9.9 point per game average, and 15th in assists (2.2) and steals (1.2). Uchida was fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.6) and eighth in assists with an average of 3.4 a game. He shot 77.6 percent from the free throw line to rank 14th in the CCAA. Owens was 13th in blocked shots with an average of 0.6 blocks a game.

The Pioneers were eighth in CCAA home attendance with an average of 478 fans a game.
