TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team played three games on Saturday's second day of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, picking up its first win of the weekend in game three after dropping the first two contests. The Pioneers (8-19) held off Northwest Nazarene, 6-5, after falling to No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific, 6-1, and St. Martin's, 3-1, earlier in the day.
The Pioneers opened the day against the third-ranked Sea Warriors, where they shut down HPU for five innings to start the game. Junior starter Cat Schorn allowed four hits and a walk in the first five frames, but forced the Sea Warriors to leave five on the bases, even getting out of a bases loaded situation in the top of the fourth.
Cal State East Bay got the scoring started, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. After junior Nikki Freiberg reached on an error, junior Sarah Hasenfus brought her around to score on an infield single before HPU starter Sherise Musquiz ended the inning.
The lead for the Pioneers was short-lived, however, as Hawai'i Pacific scored four runs in the top of the sixth on two hits and an error, chasing Schorn from the game before freshman pitcher Lauren Zweigle ended the inning with a strikeout, sending the game to the bottom of the sixth with HPU up 4-1.
Musquiz allowed just one hit over the last two innings, while the Sea Warriors added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to seal their 28th win of the season. Musquiz finished the day with five strikeouts in seven innings of work to pick up the win. Schorn took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing four runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.
The Pioneers' second game of the day and fourth overall followed immediately after game one. East Bay got on the board first again, scoring a run in the top of the third. After freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado reached and advanced to second on an error, Hasenfus moved her around to third. Sophomore Breezy Johnson followed with a single to right to drive in the run and give CSUEB a 1-0 lead.
After a quiet bottom of the third and top of the fourth, St. Martin's responded with three runs on three hits, including a homer off the bat of Emily Squiers that put the Saints up 3-1. From there, SMU starter Amanda Arnzen shut down the Pioneers, allowing just one hit over the final three innings to pick up the victory.
After scoring just two runs combined in the first two games of the day, the Pioneers ended the near-drought with six runs in the final contest of pool play against Northwest Nazarene. After two scoreless innings, East Bay scored first for the third time in as many games. With one out, Coronado singled and stole second before Hasenfus singled to put runners on first and third. Freshman first baseman Emily Montanez drove a fly ball to left field which was deep enough to bring in the run and put East Bay up 1-0.
After Schorn's third-straight hitless inning, the Pioneers continued to build momentum with another two runs in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff walk for freshman Sara Holdridge and a single from Freiberg, Johnson reached on a fielder's choice and all runners were safe on an error to start the bottom of the fourth. Schorn helped her own cause with an RBI single to right, leaving the bases loaded for freshman Chelsea McEachran, whose sacrifice fly brought in pinch runner Renaye Gamson to put the Pioneers up 3-0.
NNU got onto the board in the bottom of the inning, getting two runs on two hits to cut the Pioneer lead to just one, 3-2. After a scoreless top of the fifth, the Crusaders tied things up 3-3 before stranding three on the bases to end the inning.
Cal State East Bay took the lead for good in the top of the sixth, getting three runs on four hits. After McEachran smacked a double off the fence in left center, Coronado put runners on first and third with a slap single that chased NNU starter Nicole Grummons from the game. With Chelsey Anderson on to pitch, Hasenfus singled to center to score the go-ahead run. After a ground out moved the runners over, senior catcher Rachelle Boone singled to bring in a pair, giving East Bay a 6-3 advantage with 1 1/2 innings to play.
A leadoff double from Sarah Varady drove Schorn from the game in favor of Zweigle. After the freshman got two outs, she gave up a two-run shot to catcher Arielle Chao who cut the lead to one, 6-5 before Zweigle got a ground out to end the sixth. Zweigle finished off the game to earn her first save of the season, while Schorn picked up the win.
Schorn tossed five innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while Zweigle three two innings, allowing one run on two hits. Boone and Freiberg paced the Pioneers, both going 3-for-4 with Boone driving in a pair and Freiberg scoring one. Meanwhile, Coronado and Hasenfus both went 2-for-4 at the plate, with Coronado scoring twice and Hasenfus notching one run and one RBI.
With a 1-4 record in pool play, the Pioneers finished in the sixth spot in Pool A to move on to the Bronze Bracket. East Bay will take on Chaminade in the first elimination game tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Warrior Field on the Cal State Stanislaus campus.
