CARSON, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Pioneers (4-14, 4-14 CCAA) led for most of game one before a late rally gave the Toros a 7-6 win in eight innings, while game two saw CSUDH dominate, posting a 9-0 win in five innings while one-hitting CSUEB in game two.

East Bay got off to a fast start in game one, as senior Sarah Davini opened the game with a leadoff single to center. After Davini stole second, freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado singled to put runners on first and third with no outs. Freshman first baseman Emily Montanez singled to drive in both Davini and Coronado before being thrown out at first. After allowing two runs, CSUDH starter Stephanie Jimenez settled down, getting the final two outs to end the inning.

With a 2-0 lead to start with, Pioneer freshman starter Lauren Zweigle went to work, allowing just two hits and striking out four in the first four innings. Jimenez was equally effective, holding East Bay to just one hit over the next four innings while chalking up four strikeouts of her own.

The Toros looked set to get on the scoreboard in the fifth, as they tried to put together a rally after senior Jessica Marlow singled to right with one out. Zweigle got senior Katie Garcia to fly out to put two outs on the board before junior pitcher Cat Schorn came on in relief. Schorn gave up a single to Emiley McEwen before ending the inning by getting CSUDH cleanup hitter Amber Angel to groundout to second.

Up 2-0, the Pioneers tacked on another pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Davini led off with another single before Cornado laid down the bunt to move the runner to second. A single to center from Montanez put runners on first and third for senior Rachelle Boone. After Boone reached on an error, Davini scored and pinch runner Breezy Johnson moved to third. Boone's pinch runner, Mary Ogden, stole second but Johnson got picked off at third on the play, leaving one on and two outs for junior Nikki Freiberg. The Pioneer center fielder came through, singling down the left field line to bring in Ogden and give East Bay a 4-0 lead through five and a half innings.

The Toros finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, putting together four hits and driving in one run before leaving two on as Schorn got out of the inning with two ground balls. The Pioneers answered back with another run in their half of the seventh. After freshman Renaye Gamson reached on an error and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Schorn and a ground out from Sarah Hasenfus, Davini laid down a bunt single to bring Gamson in and give East Bay a 5-1 lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills wouldn't go down quietly, as they posted four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 5-5. Back-to-back singles and an error in the first three at-bats loaded the bases for senior Caitlin McGrath, whose sacrifice groundout drove in the first run of the inning. Katie Jordan followed with an RBI single to center, driving Schorn from the game with one out and runners on first and third. Zweigle returned for the Pioneers, giving up a two-run single that tied the game before ending the inning.

The top of the eighth saw Cal State East Bay recover from the rough seventh, scoring the go-ahead run on a pair of doubles from Montanez and Boone. The Toros, however, weren't finished, as they led off with a single and double to put runners on first and third with no out. After Zweigle got the three and four hitters out, McGrath hit a walk-off single to drive in both runners and give Dominguez Hills the 7-6 win in eight innings.

Jimenez got the win after tossing seven innings, striking out six and allowing four runs. Zweigle took the loss despite allowing just two runs and striking out four in six innings of work.

The Toros picked up where they left off in game two, starting things off with a four-run first inning on three hits and an error. Jimenez was nearly perfect in the circle, allowing just one hit and walking just one in four innings to stifle the Pioneer offense.

Leading 4-0, the Toros added another run in the bottom of the second on a pair of singles. After a scoreless third, Cal State Dominguez Hills continued its success at the plate. Garcia reached on an error to lead off the inning followed by a single, a pair of walks, an RBI groundout and another single to drive in four runs in the inning and take a 9-0 lead. Sophomore pitcher Wendy Espindola closed out the game for the Toros to cap the eight-run rule victory in five innings.

The Pioneers and Toros will get back to work tomorrow morning in Carson. The first pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Toro Diamond. Live stats for both games will be available .
