CSUEB Splits Doubleheader with Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team split the final doubleheader of its four-game weekend series with Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Pioneers (5-15, 5-15 CCAA) bounced back from a Friday sweep with a 4-2 win in eight innings in game one before falling to the Toros 5-2 in the series finale.

Game one saw the starting pitchers come out strong, as both made it through two innings without giving up a hit. East Bay starter Lauren Zweigle struck out two and got our of a two-on no-out situation in the bottom of the first without allowing a run. Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Stephanie Jimenez sat down the Pioneers in order in each of the first three innings.

The Toros got on the board first, putting together a pair of singles to start off the inning. Emiley McEwen drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly with one out, but Zweigle stopped the rally there to get out of the inning with the Toros leading 1-0.

After the Pioneers broke up the no hitter in the fourth and got another single in the fifth, Dominguez Hills added another run in its half of the fifth. Down 2-0, East Bay got on the board in the top of the sixth. After a one-out pinch hit single from freshman Chelsea McEachran, senior Sarah Davini belted a homerun to center field, her first of the season, to tie the game 2-2.

A scoreless bottom of the sixth and seventh innings sent the Pioneers and Toros to extra innings tied at two. The top of the eighth saw Davini walk before freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado reached on an error to put two on with one out. Freshman first baseman Emily Montanez singled to left to load the bases for senior Rachelle Boone, whose sacrifice fly drove in Davini as the go-ahead run. Junior Nikki Freiberg followed with a single to right that drove in Coronado to give the Pioneers a 4-2 lead. Zweigle finished things off by sitting down the Toros in order in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Zweigle picked up her first victory of the season, throwing eight innings and striking out four, while Jimenez took the loss. Davini paced the Pioneers offensively, driving in two and scoring twice while going 2-for-3 at the plate and walking once.

Game two saw East Bay get started right away, scoring once in the top of the first. Davini remained hot, singling to lead off the game and advancing to second on a fielder's choice from Coronado. Boone singled down the left field line with one out to drive in Davini and give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead before CSUDH starter Wendy Espindola got a strike out and a ground ball to end the inning.

Two and a half scoreless innings followed before Cal State Dominguez Hills broke through in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff single from McEwen and a walk for Amber Angel put two on for Caitlin McGrath, whose single loaded the bases before pinch runner Daisy Beltran scored on a wild pitch. With two on, Rose Vargas homered to bring in another three runs and give the Toros a 4-1 lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills added another in the bottom of the fifth before East Bay made some noise in the bottom of the sixth, but left the bases loaded after a walk and two Toro errors. The Pioneers tried to make a game of it in the bottom of the seventh, as Davini and Coronado led off with back-to-back singles, followed by an RBI single from Boone to close the gap to three. Espindola finished things off, however, getting a fly ball and a ground out to pick up the win.

Davini finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with four runs and two RBI, while Boone drove in three runs on the day and went 3-for-4 in game two.

The Pioneers return to action next weekend, stepping away from CCAA action to face off against Dominican for a doubleheader in Hayward on Mar. 20.
