- March 11, 2010
HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team hits the road for just the second time this season, taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend in Carson. The Pioneers (4-12, 4-12 CCAA) will be looking to bounce back from a four-game sweep last weekend as they reach the halfway point in the CCAA season.
East Bay enters the weekend sitting in eighth place in the conference after a weekend sweep by first-place Sonoma State last week. Prior to the series with the Seawolves, the Pioneers had taken at least one game in each of the first three series of the season, including a split with Cal State San Bernardino Feb. 27 and 28. As a team, CSUEB is batting .210 and has a combined 4.51 earned run average and will be looking to ramp up the offense this weekend after scoring two runs or less in 11 games so far this season.
Senior Sarah Davini is leading the Pioneers, batting .333 with 10 walks and five runs in 15 starts. Freshman Sara Holdridge is pacing East Bay with six RBI and three homeruns. Junior pitcher Cat Schorn has collected each of the Pioneers four wins in the circle, throwing 53.1 innings, while freshman Lauren Zweigle has been a hard-luck loser several times and ranks fourth in the conference with 43 strikeouts in 49.1 innings of work.
The Toros (13-9, 8-8) took three of four last weekend against Cal State Stanislaus, out-scoring the Warriors 21-10 over the course of four games. Dominguez Hills is currently in fifth place in the CCAA standings and ranks third in the league with a .294 team batting average. The Toros' 3.17 ERA ranks fifth in the conference.
Senior first baseman Amber Angel is leading the Toros and is sixth in the CCAA with a .418 batting average. Her 28 hits and 18 RBI both rank second in the league, while her 7-for-12 performance at the plate and 1.500 slugging percentage last weekend earned her Worth/CCAA Player of the Week honors. Emiley McEwen and Angel have combined to hit 13 homeruns this season and rank first and second in the league, respectively. In the circle, Lauren Harper leads CSUDH with a 2.97 ERA, while Stephanie Jimenez has compiled seven wins and 55 strikeouts on the year.
The Pioneers and Toros are set to get underway on Friday afternoon at Toro Diamond at 1 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is set for an 11 a.m. first pitch in Carson. Live stats for all four games will be available .
