HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team posted a pair of eight-run rule victories over Dominican in its first non-conference action of the season on Saturday at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers (7-15) posted an 11-1 win in game one of the doubleheader before topping the Penguins 13-3 in the finale, both ending in five innings.

After freshman starter Lauren Zweigle struck out the side in the top of the first of game one, the Pioneers got to work in their half of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits. After freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado singled, freshman first baseman Emily Montanez blasted a ball over the fence in left center to put East Bay up 2-0 before Dominican got out of the inning.

The Penguins answered with a run in the top of the second before Cal State East Bay batted around and put together eight hits in the bottom of the second. Freshman third baseman Devon Mercurio doubled to left to leadoff the inning, junior left fielder Cat Schorn singled to put two on for junior second baseman Sarah Hasenfus whose single drove in Mercurio. A walk by senior right fielder Sarah Davini loaded the bases for Coronado, whose single brought in Schorn. Montanez followed with her second hit of the day, driving in another two runs to bring her total to four and give the Pioneers a 6-1 lead. Back-to-back hits from senior catcher Rachelle Boone and freshman designated player Sara Holdridge brought in another two runs and chased DU starter Lesley Fay from the game.

Reliever Alisha McKnight got two outs before Schorn reached first on a passed ball on a third strike, prolonging the inning and allowing Hasenfus to drive in another two runs with a double to left. McKnight finally got a groundout to end the inning, but not before the Pioneers took an 11-1 lead.

After shutting down the Penguins in the third, Zweigle was relieved by junior Dani Foster who came on to throw two innings of no-hit softball to finish out the game. Zweigle picked up the win, her second of the year, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four in three innings of work. Foster threw two scoreless innings, walking just one and facing nine.

Montanez finished a monster game with four RBI and one run while going 2-for-2 at the plate with a two-run homer. Coronado was 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in another.

Game two saw more of the same from the Pioneers, who got started immediately, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first. A one-out walk by Coronado followed by a steal got things going before Montanez singled and her pinch runner, Tia Wunder, stole second and Coronado scored on the throw to give East Bay a 1-0 lead.

With runners on first and second and two outs, junior center fielder Nikki Freiberg singled to left to drive in the second run of the game. Mercurio followed with a single to left to drive in a pair before sophomore second baseman Mary Ogden reached first on a passed ball on a third strike to extend the inning. Schorn helped out her own cause, singling to center to drive in another and give East Bay a 5-0 lead. Davini drew a walk to load the bases for Coronado, who continued her impressive day with a double to left to drive in two, followed by a Montanez fielder's choice that brought in Davini to cap the scoring and put CSUEB up 8-0 after just one inning.

A solo homerun from Dominican's Kellie Hislop in the top of the second got the Penguins on the board before Schorn ended the inning with a 8-1 lead. After a quiet bottom of the second, DU continued to chip away at the lead, scoring two runs on one hit and two errors in the bottom of the third to cut the East Bay advantage to 8-3.

The two squads got through the bottom of the third and top of the fourth without scoring before the Pioneers opened the game up again in the bottom of the fourth. After Freiberg reached on an error to lead off the inning, a pair of ground balls loaded the bases for Schorn, who singled to center to drive in a run and chase starter Jessi Saaty from the game and bring in Shawna Robb to pitch. After a passed ball brought Mercurio in to score, the Pioneers led 10-3 and loaded the bases for Montanez with another Davini walk. The first baseman came through again, singling to right to bring in another run. Boone followed with a two-run double to put East Bay up 13-3.

The Pioneers brought on freshman Chelsea McEachran to pitch for the first time this season in the top of the fifth. After giving up a leadoff single to Robb, McEachran struck out a pair and got a groundout to end the inning and finish off the victory.

Schorn picked up her fifth win of the season, allowing three runs on two hits in four innings of work while striking out seven. Saaty took the loss, allowing 12 runs on 10 hits in three innings.

Montanez finished the day 5-for-6 at the plate with five RBI, while Coronado scored three runs and drove in two while going 3-for-5. Freiberg helped pace the Pioneers in game two, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Mercurio went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Meanwhile, Schorn helped her own cause again, driving in a pair and scoring twice while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Davini also stayed hot at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three runs and drawing four walks in the leadoff spot.

The Pioneers will return to action next Friday, traveling to Turlock for the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The tournament will feature more than 50 games over three days. East Bay will open the tournament against Montana State-Billings at 4:15 p.m. on March 26.
