HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team dropped its second straight doubleheader at the hands of first-place Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers (4-12, 4-12 CCAA) were edged by the Seawolves (15-4, 10-2), 3-2, in game one before falling, 9-2, in the series finale.

Game one saw East Bay get out to an early lead for the first time all weekend. After senior catcher Sarah Davini drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the first, she stole second and was moved over to third on a sacrifice hit from freshman shortstop Ashley Coronado. Freshman first baseman Emily Montanez was hit by a pitch to take first, where freshman Tia Wunder pinch ran. With freshman Sara Holdridge batting, Wunder stole second and Davini scored on the throw down by Sonoma catcher Skylynn Myers to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. SSU starter Samantha Lipperd bounced back with two strikeouts to end the inning and hold East Bay to just one run.

The next three innings saw both starters get into a groove, as the two squads combined for just one hit and two total baserunners. East Bay freshman starter Lauren Zweigle struck out four and gave up just two hits in her first four innings of work, while Lipperd regained composure to record four strikeouts of her own after giving up the run in the first.

A homerun from designated player Ali Palermo led off the fifth inning and tied the game 1-1 before Sonoma State pinch hitter Simone Brandalise gave the Seawolves their first lead of the day on a solo shot to right one batter later. The two homers chased Zweigle from the game, bringing in junior Cat Schorn to end the inning with back-to-back groundouts.

Sonoma's 2-1 lead didn't last for long, however, as the Pioneers answered back in their half of the fifth. Schorn doubled to center to open the inning and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore second baseman Mary Ogden. With Schorn on third and one out, senior Rachelle Boone pinch hit for East Bay, singling to left to drive in the run and tie the game 2-2. After an infield pop up, Coronado was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two out, but Lipperd notched her fifth strikeout of the game, retiring the side.

The top of the sixth inning proved to be decisive for the Seawolves, as they strung together three two-out singles, scoring the go-ahead run before Schorn struck out Myers to end the inning. With the 3-2 advantage, Lipperd sat down the Pioneers in order in both the sixth and the seventh, notching three more strikeouts to finish the game and earn her eighth win of the season.

In the series finale the Seawolves got out to a quick start, taking a three-run lead through two and a half innings. The Pioneers answered in their half of the third, getting an RBI single from Montanez to drive in sophomore shortstop Breezy Johnson, who led off the inning with a walk.

Leading 3-1, Sonoma State broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits, all with two outs. LeeAnn Stroud drove in three in the inning with a homerun off Schorn, while Ledford capped the scoring with a two-run shot of her own, giving the Seawolves a 9-1 lead going into the bottom half of the fourth.

The Pioneers looked set to answer with a crooked number of their own in their half of the fourth after loading the bases for freshman Renaye Gamson. After SSU starter Julianne Martinez hit Gamson to drive in East Bay's second run of the game, she regained control to end the threat and leave the bases loaded.

Martinez finished the game strong, maintaining the 9-2 lead and striking out two in the final three innings to earn the win. Zweigle got the loss, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out eight in 5.1 innings of work.

Schorn led the Pioneers at the plate on Sunday, going 1-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a double. Davini also had a good day in the leadoff spot for East Bay, scoring a run and drawing three walks. Despite taking her seventh loss of the season in game two, Zweigle struck out 12 in 9.2 innings on the day.

Cal State East Bay returns to action next weekend, hitting the road for a four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. The Toros and Pioneers will meet for the first of two doubleheaders on March 12 at 1 p.m.
