- March 7, 2010
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team got off to rough start in this weekend's "Cal Lu"-fornia Spring Classic tournament but bounced back to win its final three games and improve to 14-6 on the season. The 19th-ranked Pioneers fell to No. 6 Arizona State, 20-2, before rebounding to top Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 13-6, down La Verne, 19-9, and edge Pomona-Pitzer, 9-7.
In Saturday's tournament opener, East Bay struggled against a quick Arizona State team. The Sun Devils held the Pioneers to their lowest goal total of the season, shutting CSUEB out for three of four quarters. ASU jumped out to 4-0 lead in the first quarter before East Bay got onto the board in the second, getting its only goals of the game from seniors Lauren Griffin and Jenna Casady, but trailing 9-2 at halftime. The Sun Devils added another 11 unanswered goal in the final two quarters to take the 20-2 win, one of its five on the weekend. Shannon Haas led ASU with five goals, while East Bay goalie Emily Hucal made five saves.
After the tough loss, the Pioneers had just a few hours to regroup, but it was enough, as East Bay came up with the 13-6 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon. CMS kept things close early on, as the Pioneers took a 6-4 lead into the half. East Bay scored another three goals in the third, but the Athenas scored two of their own, sending the game into the fourth with the Pioneers leading 9-6. CSUEB finished strong, though, holding CMS scoreless in the final quarter while scoring four goals.
Casady and freshman leading scorer Claire Pierce paced the Pioneers with three goals apiece, while Griffin, junior two meter Liz Warren and junior driver Whitney Bell each added two. Senior goalie Lauren Merrill notched four saves in the win.
Sunday morning, East Bay continued the trend, out-scoring La Verne 15-7 through the first three quarters and holding the Leopards to two goals or less in three periods. After being outscored 4-2 in the second quarter and taking an 8-5 lead into the half, the Pioneers turned it up in the third, scoring seven goals and finishing the game on an 11-4 run.
Nine East Bay players scored in the win, with Warren, Brianna Finney and Danielle Comforti each putting away three goals and Pierce, Alex Gudenau Tristan Kennedy-Donaahue and Chelsie Bryan adding two apiece. Elizabeth Roberts led the Leopards with six goals on the day.
Cal State East Bay's final win of the weekend came over a Pomona-Pitzer squad that was ranked No. 1 in the CWPA Division III poll last week, but was not without suspense. Both defenses got the job done in the first quarter allowing just one goal apiece. The Pioneers took a 4-3 lead into the half after out-scoring the Sagehens 3-2 in the second frame. The third quarter would prove to be decisive, although East Bay scored just two goals, Pomona-Pitzer scored only one, sending the teams to the fourth quarter with the Pioneers leading 6-4. The Sagehens made things interesting in the fourth, matching the Pioneers' three goals but never overcoming the two-goal lead.
East Bay's scoring was led by Pierce's three goals, while Kennedy-Donahue and Warren each contributed two goals and Griffin and Bryan added a goal apiece. Merrill and Hucal combined to make six saves in the victory.
Pierce had another successful weekend, tallying eight goals to pace the Pioneers, while Kennedy-Donahue notched five goals in the four games.
Cal State East Bay returns home after two weeks and 10 games on the road this week, hosting Sonoma State and Macalester College on Saturday. The Pioneers will meet the Seawolves at noon before taking on the Scots at 3 p.m. at Pioneer Pool.
